Best < £500 laptop

I'm just doing a bit of research for a friend, who wants a new laptop which he will use for general day-to-day activities and some mild gaming. I have a lot of knowledge on desktop hardware at the minute but not much on laptops, so I'm wondering what you guys would recommend for him.

Budget is £500, I'd say i3/i5 over AMD

When I was looking before getting my Dell XPS, I did find an Acer TravelMate 7750G with 17.3" display, Core i5-2540m, Radeon HD 6770M graphics, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD for a smidge over £500.

I was tempted, but decided that a 17.3", 3.2kg laptop was just too big and heavy given I'd be carrying it around a lot. If your mate doesn't mind the size and weight, though, it's a bargain imho. Certainly as good a laptop spec for games as I've seen for around that price. That 6770m is around 30% faster than the 630m or similar you usually find in £500 laptops.

Not sure I can link or name the vendor given the site rules about competitors, but you could always try some Google-fu!
