*** Mid-2012 Android phone buyers guide (high-end) ***

I think it's a shame you've left the Nexus out purely based on hardware. Yes, the hardware is dated but the software experience is arguably the best on any current Android phone, unencumbered by manufacturer bloat. It's also the only device to have Jellybean.

It's in there, but ultimately I don't think it can be considered to be competitive.

Aside from the software and screen, everything else isn't great.

It still got a mention though!

I got my Sensation last year and it's still fine, with a custom rom, so I'll be skipping this round of phones and wait for the next lot.

I think it'd be the Sammy for me if I was to upgrade now. I like HTC but someone said in another thread they wished there was a "turn sense off" option to be able to go to stock Android. Of course I'd root and custom rom any phone i got so it wouldn't affect me but I expect most people don't do this so the option would be good for them.

I think the software has got to be fundamentally more important than the hardware though - if it's only got a dual core CPU, but runs things well on a nice, stock version of Android it doesn't matter if it's less powerful.

It's a shame the Nexus release cycle is end of the year when the top-end devices usually come out just a few months later. Oh well, hoping for a Teg/Exynos/S4 Nexus in November!

My gf has a Nexus and it runs everything flawlessly plus has a lovely screen, can't understand the hate :p

Hate for the GNex - sup par camera, lack of storage, dimmer than average screen, weak GPU for 720p res.

Design/Aesthetics wise - It's number 1 for me.

Okay, TLDR version (to be added to OP):

  1. Design - Tie
  2. Screen - Tie between One X and S3
  3. Battery life - HTC One S, very closely followed by S3
  4. Internals - Tie between One S and S3
  5. Software skins - Tie
  6. Phone/cell performance - Tie between S3 and One X
  7. Audio performance - Tie between One S and S3
  8. Camera - S3
  9. Video recording - S3
  10. Connectivity (NFC, etc) - Tie between One X and S3
  11. Storage - S3, followed by One X
  12. ROM/Dev support - Tie between One X and S3
  13. Price - One S is cheapest

There we go. :p

I have the DAC down as a tie, but there are a lot of conflicting reports. Some say the One S is great, others say it's not so great, same for the S3. Anyone have any more info on that?

The "lazy" people will be happy now :p

Just re-reading it again and I would put software skins as personal preference rather as well as keeping "tie".

As for phone/cell performance would the S not be the same, if not better than the X due to the better sound quality. It only performs poor in that area if you have the signal issue (which many of the S users here don't, only 2 people I think have it, richy and some other guy, can't remember name :p :o)

Whilst the camera for overall quality on the GS 3 is better in some areas (especially the front camera), it isn't as good in other scenarios and then the camera UI/features of sense V4/S/X are huge as well and much better than GS 3/touchwiz.

Re: connectivity - lack of NFC (something more and more people are using) is a stupid omission, so the One S has to come last in that respect unfortunately.

The HTC One phones having filters doesn't really make that much of a difference, the quality of the S3 camera seems to be noticeably better in most situations.

Also this is the TLDR section, so it's for lazy people. No detail required!

Oh I know, I meant a "tie" for the X and GS 3 :p

I was just using that as an example for the use of "tie", "personal preference" and "personal preference/tie" :p :o

I know but it is nice to have those features built in and some of them are pretty cool/useful particularly the slow motion recording, but not just the features, but also due to the UI and the way that certain actions are performed, small things but for me and some others they are the most impressive things about the camera on sense V4 i.e. the burst feature, with the GS 3 you have to select it first and then take the shots where as with sense V4 you just hold the camera button down and that is it.

The quality seems to be mixed still, as going by stoosh's comparisons the GS 3 beat the S in the second set of photos easily, (the one with the butterfly) but the rest all seem to be more or less the same, I thought the S had the edge overall particularly in the last set of photos http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showpost.php?p=22234719&postcount=1255 apart from the last photo of the bus stop, which looks better on the GS 3.

In the very first set of photos the S looked much better than the GS 3 although it appeared to be a problem with the camera and improved a lot with that update.

The s/X are much better in low light shots.

In the end it seems to come down mostly to, more natural colours VS more vibrant colours, some people prefer more vibrant colours, where as others prefer more natural colours, for me it depends on the objects that I am taking a photo off i.e. for outdoor shots I prefer more vibrant colours.

The natural colours argument isn't going to work when talking about the GS3, as you won't see them most of the time when looking at the pictures on the AMOLED screen... :D

True :p

TBH I don't really see why people are bothered by the camera if they just look at photos/videos on a tiny mobile screen  as they will always look great on a small good screen even if the camera isn't that great, much better looking at photos/videos on a PC monitor or TV, which are far far better overall and you can see all the extra detail with the GS 3, S and X cameras.

Can anyone tell me, has anyone encountered any issues with the fact that the OneX is a closed unit? Such as needing to hard boot, battery failure, mem card problems, etc? Still umming about a Galaxy vs OneX see :)

Hard reboot = Hold power for 10s on all closed android devices, it's built into the hardware controller on every handset and tablet I've come accross at least. Everything else is warranty or not an issue (no mem card slot on the X ;) )

Well, the Orange shop decided for me. 20% discount for forces on line rental on anything but the S3 or iPhone :p OneX it is then!

Why are they excluded?? Its the same tariff (I assume at least) for all the high end phones. Why should the choice of handset effect the tariff discount?

You're right, the S3 is the same tarriff. I had the same response as you but that was that  Ah well, I had a Desire before so I originally aimed at getting a One, it wasn't until I played around with the S3 in the shop last week was I unsure.
