The discussion is about minimum and acceptable incomes, not about the morality of State Welfare. You could argue that if incomes are being squeezed then the State is obligated to address that, either by benefits, tax breaks or regulation.

I would rather this didn't turn into one group bashing another group becasue they are reliant on, or receive State Support and they happen to buy a PC or run a Car. :)
 
As a couple without children, our net income per month works out about the same as £35,000 per year. (Quite hard to work out as I'm in higher education and work part time.) I live in Manchester which is relatively cheap yet I still feel poor.

I wouldn't even consider having kids till we earnt a net wage of £3000 per month. I'm sure I could afford them on much less but I wouldn't want to try it.

I was on £12k for 1.5 years living in London. It was difficult and I did need help from WTC but it has taught me to be very resourceful for which I am glad :).

Regarding children, only just come round to wanting them but only if I and my future girlfriend/wife (:p) can afford to - though I would hope by then the household income would be above £40k :o:p.

this is one thing that annoys me, a fair bit, but im sure 99% of you will disagree.

when me and my wife split up, only 1 of us could become the boys legal guardian or whatever. which, was decided to be her (mainly by her). the thing is, I have them 3 days a week, she has them 4. I work 37.5 hours a week on just over minimum wage and struggle, she works self employed, takes no wage and lives nicely off the benefits she gets because she has the kids.

there needs to be a system where joint custody means a joint split in the benefits in my opinion. I still have to feed, cloth and entertain them for half the week.

I'd prefer a more even distribution in the wages as opposed to state welfare, but as we all know, that's unlikely to occur.

Wealth redistribution only really happens when businesses refuse to pay the workers enough to continue economic cyclic consumption, the state has the plug the gap to keep the economic ball rolling.

Could you not come to an amicable agreement re the cost of food & entertainment given that this is what the benefits are for. You surely do not need to buy them clothes as again, she is the "carer" with the benefits?
 
Depends what you define as 'acceptably' one mans minimum standards are different to another, i can't see how i could raise a family on 36k a year, they would miss out on so much in life.

in an ideal world yes, but she does not see it that way. she insisted she needed to move to a nice area, with higher rent and the need to run a car etc so she 'needs' the money. whereas I had to move within walking distance from my work as I cannot afford to run a car. making my rent more expensive than I would have liked, and I still need atleast a 2 bed so my kids can stay with me.

they pretty much are but only if you follow the basic rules

1, be on pay as you go
2, do not use the phone for regular calls! (10 credit should almost last you forever this way)
3, only use it for emergency calls!
4, the most important reason for owning it should be so people can contact you easily , not so you can tell your friends about what happened on jeremy kyle
5, you do not need the latest smart phone! just a phone that works! be sensible its not a fashion accessory its a device that allows people to contact you in emergencies like if your kid splits his head open at school
