I have sold my bike! Time to get a car to run aroundd in for a year.

Reason for cheap is I need to save money!

So it has to be cheap on insurance, fun to drive. Cheap to run ect ect.

My requirements from the car are to get from A - B. Don't need boot space, it won't be used for commuting (I walk to work), only random trips to see my father a hour away and maybe a weekend away in Wales for some camping and walking.

Basically, not love will go into the car.

MX-5's are cheap to buy, cheap to run, cheap to insure and bags of fun.

Failing that, my default fallback of MK1 focus 1.6 zetec.

mx-5
Gen 6 celica
mazda 323/626
Old accord saloon/older still coupe
Mondeo
Focus
Primera
CRV (maybe)
xsara vts (if you're willing to take a fair old punt on it working, they seem to be either very good or very bad - nice drive though)

There's a fair mix of cars giving you different things but all pretty reliable bar the xsara and dirt cheap to buy. As above, condition is everything I've seen dogs of accords for £1k and cars that were absolutely fine for £600

Mk1 Focus 1.8 5 door. Handles well, cheap as chips to run and it has room for 5 adults comfortably. I can even get a 21" frame mtb in/out the boot without taking the wheels off (seats down).

Failing that, my default fallback of MK1 focus 1.6 zetec.

We went for the 1.8 as I thought the 1.6 was gutless and the economy effectively the same as the 1.8.

Wrong way round - the 1.8 is no faster than the 1.6 and returns even worse fuel economy than the 1.6.

Having driven both the 1.8 feels more meaty but in realist is no quicker (my brother had one at the same time as I had a 1.6, there was literally nothing in it). On the other hand I returned 40mpg and he struggled with low 30s.

Difference in insurance was negligible though.

actually the 1.8 is regarded as a rather pointless engine. Hardly more poke than the 1.6, but very close in economy to the 2.0. So either the 1.6 or 2.0.
Le: beaten to it.

This, the 1.8 is known for fuel guzzling and no faster than the 1.6.

Pug 306D would be my choice reliable and cheap to run
