A place to hide from the OcUK spotless leather and shiny car brigade - tell us about your banger, or if you're in the market for something ask for advice etc. :D

I had a bit of a 'car emergency' a couple of weeks ago and needed some wheels fast. My 75 decided it'd be amusing to suffer liquid ingress to the ECU, causing all manner of electrical nightmares I just didn't have time to fix.

As I sat on my mate's sofa (it broke down at his house, thanks for that car!) fondly remembering the days of trolleying around in some decrepit albeit reliable rustbucket, I picked up my laptop and loaded eBay Motors. 12 hours later I was getting off the train in sunny Birmingham on a crisp Monday morning to go and pick up the monstrosity I'd found for £400 the evening before, post beer.

It's honestly the most poorly specced car I've ever owned. No air conditioning, fabric seats and a tape deck. Lovely.

It gives you a wave of confidence when the address you bought it from turns out to be a scrap yard, and even more so when the owner says 'if you break down on the way home, give us a bell as we've got another coming in this affy!'

Anyway, behold!

It's a 1996 420 SD saloon, with a whopping 86bhp. It has nasty rust on one rear arch, and is in a colour that looks like 50,000 mile old engine oil.

The good bits:
- Ultra reliable 86bhp non-intercooled mechanically injected 2.0 diesel engine, complete with turbo you could fit in a shirt pocket
- Full electric windows
- Bodywork isn't too bad, need to back-to-black the rubbing strips on the doors
- Saloon boot is huuuuge!
- Electric sunroof is a good option (and doesn't leak), I've already had a friend do the 'Titanic' thing out of it while parked on a cliff edge. The bugger stood on some tomato sauce sachets, rendering my centre console blood red.

Came with 4 months tax, 12 months MOT and it's had new front and rear discs, a new clutch, 2 new tyres (Michelin) and a new exhaust. These new parts are pretty much the reason I bought it.

Got it on 110k, now on 112k and it's been great although so motherfudging slow it's unreal.

So that's my bangernomics special - your turn!

Crappest looking banger wins a pint at the next OcUK meet, but I think I might have to buy myself that one. :p

Volvo 940 2.3 LPT Celebration.

Bought June last year for £980. Cashed the tax in for £140 (Disabled so Tax Exempt) so in reality, it cost me £840. 12 Months MOT and half a tank of fuel.

In a year, its had a new radiator (£100) and I got the aircon regassed (£60). Its been serviced and had a new cambelt (about £70 all in).

Everything works. Heated seats, heated mirrors, heated rear screen, electric windows all round, aircon. Heater like a sauna. Fitted my el cheapo Lidl Bluetooth stereo for hands free calls and listening to music via USB.

Done about 10k miles in it since i've had it, and recently just got back from a trip to le mans.

135bhp LPT engine pulls well. Has enough power for me but i've still got a boost controller waiting to be fitted at some point if I ever get around to it!
My commute to work is only two miles, so its not great on petrol, but returned 30mpg on the way down to le mans, two up and fully loaded, so thats not too bad!

It might be a bit of a banger, but i do like to look after it (and yes, the hideous steering wheel cover was removed right after the pictures were taken!)

Awesome ^

I purchased a MR2 Turbo for £881 off ebay this time last year, it had 12 months Mot, no tax

Its done really well so far ... 0 problems and quite rapid too!

2.0 Mr2 Turbo
J Reg
12 Months Mot
Matt black .. People are gonna hate lol :p
Volk Wheels (wider on back)
Pheonix Departure Exhaust
Different Manifold
Downpipe
Larger intercooler
K&N
1.1 bar boost
None standard Suspension
Interior is mint
Momo steering wheel
Between 250 / 280 bhp

Really nice to drive ... proper old skool

Had a service when i 1st purchased it ... £150 and the guy said it had been a well looked after (Mr. 2's).

Its due an MOT in the next 2 weeks ... hopefully will be fine (hopefully), cant think of anything it will fail on apart from the horn only working sometimes. But i wish i would have got one of these ages ago! Will be excellent bangernomics if it passes

I bought my 1989 1.3 Golf in September 2010 been driving it since Feb 2011.

Bought it for £100

Since ownership I've replaced the battery, timing belt, water pump, a throttle cable and a speedo cable,4 tyres and done 2 services.

All in has cost me about £500 in repairs and maintainance and I've put 15k miles on it. Currently sitting at 113k.

Bought a 2000 Vectra nearly 4 years ago for £800 which is still driving fine! Has needed a battery and a coil pack (i think) in that time. My partner has put about 50k on it since we bought it driving to farms etc, and we're only just thinking about a change. Probably do the cam belt at some point soon, and its due an MOT this month

At what point is buying a car considered bangernomics rather than just a cheap car?

Once you have had it for a year and it's cost you peanuts and still worth what you paid for it.

You can buy a cheap car which might cost thousands to keep on the road for a year. That is not bangernomics.

I drove my friends car for a while, horrible X reg Corsa 1.2. He paid £300 for it, scrapped it in for £175 a year later without doing anything to it.

I'd probably class it as bangernomics when you specifically buy something you know is likely to be 100% reliable and / or you opt to work on it yourself to make the experience as cheap as possible. If you just go out and throw 500 quid at anything, I wouldn't call it bangernomics.

Number 2 rule of bangernomics: Don't buy a Rover.
Shows what you know about the cars then really. The shell / suspension etc is all Honda Civic, the engine is a lump known to run forever with minimal upkeep (Honda used it in their own cars!) and the Honda-derived PG1 gearbox rarely gives issue.

The car I bought was an educated decision based upon the mechanical side of the vehicle (reliability) vs. cost. If you fail to see that from my first post, this probably isn't the thread for you.

I can do all mechanical work to this car myself, everything is simple (bolt on / bolt off) and parts are incredibly cheap.

Buy a Ford.

Have had several over the years, I'm not into bangernomics at the moment, but my all time favorite was a Zodiac III I bought for £75, it was 17 years old, ran it for two years and it never cost me anything until a rear spring broke and I scrapped it.

Bought for £650 in Jan 08 with 47k on (first registered in 97) ran it for three years and put another 40k on it.

Cost IIRC about £1,200 including tax and insurance, servicing, a few repairs over that 40k miles and three years.

Stuck it on Ebay for 99p after i bought a 58 plate Volvo V70 D5 SE Lux with what i'd saved.

Went for £500 in the end. Not bad depreciation if you ask me. Bless it, never let me down.

Anything I could buy Ford that was within budget and diesel was either fitted with the god awful 1.8 Endura D engine or had ridiculously high mileage and not much work done to make up for it.

Doubt I could find a decent Focus or Mondeo diesel for £400, and the Escort of the diesel type has the aforementioned Endura D lump... never again.

Bought a citroen berlingo 1.9D for £1600 4 years ago, sold it this week for £1500.

Had tyres all round costing less than £40 a corner.
new exhaust

needs new key and driver seat has collapsed slightly so was knocked down £250.

I know its more money than usual bangers but in terms of costs its mega cheap.

That's not really a Rover though, is it? In the same way a Daewoo isn't really a Chevy.

Rule number one is "Don't buy French or Italian"....but I am sure someone who has had a wonderful experience with a French or Italian car that cost them 20p and lasted their entire adult life will start foaming at the mouth over that one too.

So quick to assume the worst.

More accurate is "if you're buying french, buy a diesel", they actually do last for ever.

That's exactly what I'm doing, running something for pennies for a few years. I'll probably pick up a 45 diesel needing a clutch or fuel pump in a year or so, fix it and replace the 400 with that and continue onwards for the same small outlay.

Once I've settled down in a new place and have finances sorted, hoping to look at an early XF diesel when the prices have dropped a bit.

I think the only 'proper' Rover within this price group would be the 200 or 25, although they still used a fair few Honda parts. I'd never own one of those, though... because they literally fall apart in my experience.

Sorry if it seemed I jumped a bit, just grates with everyone (all of my family and friends) telling me it was a daft idea and is going to cost me loads to run.

Just ordered a new thermostat for this, as although I don't want to spend on it the extra economy will more than pay for the £9.91 it cost. :)

My family had a '98 214 mk3 since new, three of us learnt to drive on it each driving it temporarily for a few months until we upgraded after passing our tests. It then sat and rotted in a field between times until the next of us was ready for it to learn on. My youngest brother then carried on with it until he only fairly recently sold it at around 100k miles and with that utterly terrible history of drivers.

It never even had a clutch, literally nothing ever went wrong on it bar consumables as far as i am aware, it was never in the garage for anything at all.

Not all rovers are bad :p
