I have just come back from three awesome weeks in California, Nevada, Arizona etc and New York is next on my list this November. Is it really that good? I was planning on going in November but I might just sack it all off and go back to the west coast next June.
Thanks.

Its simply a large american city. The centre is like many other large american cities. There are some good landmarks as you will already be aware, but deeper than that it is what you make of it as with any large city with all of the facilities which you would expect from such a place.

Overall, i would say that no, it is not really anything to write home about. It has plenty to do as with any other major city.

Well seeing that New York is mentioned among the list with London, Tokyo...etc it must mean something.

GF's friend was killed there, on the first day of arrival too. Was held at gun point for money, hand went into pocket to retrieve money too fast, and the robber thought he was trying to grab the gun and opened fire on him.

Don't just do the tourist stuff.

I think a forum member here posted a food blog in La Cuisine and it looked ******* incredible.

I went with college and this is soo true. I thought it was, well, meh. we did all the usual tourist things and that was it. my brother went with his gf who had friends that lived then and his trip sounded awesome.

Been there twice now, not a big fan tbh.
There are far better cities over there.
Chicago is my fav, keeps me going back. Far more friendly, clean, well priced etc.

Yikes.

Had a few family members visit New York, according to them half of the "must see" sights you'd walk past without noticing.

This.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to see and do in New York but I think for a lot of people it's the only part of the US they see and are only familiar with smaller European cities. It's no wonder people go over there and are blown away.

EDIT - last comment was not a poor taste joke :o

Totally depends on what you like to do. I really liked it, compared to Los Angeles which was terrible and I have no desire to return to.

It is a very busy, touristy, dense city. If you prefer the open road and natural scenery then there are many other places to visit.

Definitely worth a visit. I disagree that it's like any other large US city - there's something unique about it. And I love the Central Park area.

New York is nice but on the whole, West Coast > East Coast.

That's because everyone goes to new your and then south... Rather than north...

Northern east coast is awesome, but then so is west coast.
