Peugeot 107 - Time for a change, help!

A car is a car and as long as you are happy with doing a long trip in a small car then that is what matters. Bigger cars may be perceived as the only way for long distance because of bring less thrashy, riding better, more comforts etc but small cars and city cars have come a long way and seem to be reliable enough for distance!

I know that I wouldn't want a big comfy, quiet boat for fear off nodding off or being less in control. My trip though is only 80miles round and on A-B roads so the MG hits the spot (unless it rains, doesn't start or needs tyres)! - the OP doesn't mention what type of roads he travels on!

If it was me looking for something small fairly capable and fun I would think about something like the Suzuki Swift, Ford Fiesta and maybe a MINI!

I drive on Dual carriageway A roads then a short stretch of a single carriageway A road. Usually clear and open except the odd tractor and lorry.

It actually isn't that bad at 78 on the motorway. My old 1.6 306 petrol struggled much more and was a lot noisier. The first 7000 miles were painful, however it seems to drive much better now it's up to about 15k.Before this I had a 2.0 TDCi 2006 Mondeo, that was good for motorway driving! Unfortunately my girlfriend wrote it off.

What about a fiesta? Lots of kit as standard, and they are really comfortable inside. Will be marginally cheaper to run than a focus, plus IMO they look a hell of a lot nicer.

2009 Ford Fiesta 1.6 TDCi Zetec S

Dog slow though, doubt he'd notice much difference from the 107. I can't really see a reason to change from a 107 to a fiesta - they more refined and will have more kit but not a lot else is hugely improved, little bit more room, likely to be similar motorway economy but diesel is more expensive, will have to shell out cash to actually buy it and it'll likely cost a bit more to insure.

I honestly can't see anything worth buying for the OP if he is comfortable enough in the 107 for the journey. Everything else increases cost for an increase in comfort / performance - neither of which seem to be an issue.

He's just after a change really. the 1.6 will be "nippy" in the fiesta shell, no doubt would easily match a 1.8 focus?

I personally wouldn't want to do 100 miles a day in a fiesta, but having said that I certainly wouldn't want to do it in a focus either.

any small car with the VAG 1.2TSI are great. Non of the issues of the 1.4 TSI 180PS and great economy vs power and drivability. Around 105PS iirc.

A rental Ibiza I had was specced with that engine, was pretty nice to drive day to day.

Not in my experience - The mrs wanted to buy one when we were changing from 2 cars to 1. I drove it and couldn't believe how bad it was performance wise. I know they're only what 90bhp but my god it was slow. Went back and drove it again as in the first instance I had been driving the 328 but for reference we took her 1.4 16v megane which again offered far more than the fiesta could. I also tried the limited run 130ish 1.6 petrol which was a world apart, could happily have lived with that but the boss did not want it for whatever reason.

Other than power and the melted transformer interior there's a lot to like about the fiesta, handles tidily and they aren't too expensive.

I agree the vag 1.2tsi would be a good engine to upgrade into, but again the op will have to shell out a significant amount just to get into the drivers seat and will then notice a significant economy decrease too. Normally I'd say that didn't matter but given he's doing 25k+ a year in a 107 i'm guessing ongoing running cost is a real issue.

100 miles a day! Wow

I did that for a month due to work change and too time to look for places closer.

Anyway, I have recently changed down from a Renault Clio 1.4 to a Toyota iQ. Totally enjoying my iQ right now. It's a tiny car, but it suits my needs, if having a 2 seater with an occasional 3rd seater / 4th including a kid (or Chinese contortionists) or something, it'll work.

It's nippy, it's powerful enough for urban drive, fast enough to drive on the motor way without feeling like you're a grandad but still heavy enough that a heavy goods truck don't scare you off the motorway.

The stock sound system is great IMHO. IIRC, 6 speakers in a small car, tweak the bass and treble up +2 and it's spot on for me. Not to mention great MPG, no road tax and will still be easy on your car insurance.

The iQ is not an everybody's car but it suits me and I suspect it'll suit you if you like a fun car to drive, if you don't need a definite 3+ seater.

The Leon isn't bad but the interior is a sea of cheap plastic, albeit quite well screwed together. You'll either love it or hate it.

The engine is an unrefined lump but will give 50+ MPG and sit at 70mph all day long without issue. It also doesn't have a DPF, which is certainly a plus (trust me on that one!).

I am having some real issues with my legs and joints, I think this is partially related to my car being rather small and a painful driving position.

Could do with sorting this out rather urgently....

But I need

*Cruise Control
* <£10k
*Comfort

Thinking... Fiesta (Zetec or Titanium) / Mondeo ( Titanium X )

If what you actually want is comfort then buy the mondeo (not a 10k one for me though). Just be aware your costs are going to increase as well as the purchase cost of the car itself

Bit of a difference between a Fiesta and a Mondeo.

You'll get a very nice condition Mondeo Titanium X for £7-10k. Plenty to choose from out there.

I would not worry too much about the standard fit radio/ CD, if this is important to you, I'd be looking at whatever car suits your motoring needs and then if need be, upgrade the audio via an ICE specialist.
