Why is public transport in this country so pathetic?

This is why public services such as busses and trains should really be run for the benefit of the public and not as a money making company.

The way they used to be run, at a huge cost the country was wrong due to mismanagement and people lining their pockets.

However running them as private companies means only routes that make money get investment and so on.. some rural communities lost 90% of their bus services when they all went private.

I would say don't look for late evening jobs in an area you would to need drive to if you can't drive.

You picking her up just sounds pointless and a waste of everyone's time.

Well, that's not true is it? It depends how much you need money in order to survive. Which leads me onto my next point.

You knew she couldn't use public transport, so that's really a non-issue.

Yet you moan about how inconvenient it would be to pick her up.

Your choices are either you pick her up (because she NEEDS this job) Or, she doesn't take the job. It's as simple as that!

Have to be honest, shouldn't had gone for that job.

That baby is going to be well not happy being woken up all the time.

How far is the work and her home? Could she not ride a bike?

There aren't many jobs out there and the ones that are go fast.

The alternative is to fraudulently obtain benefits, to not pay our bills, or to steal.

It's about 15 miles at the moment, so bike is not really an option.

Perhaps - it just seems unusual that such a large city has such a poor late night infrastructure. How much would it really cost to run one bus per hour along a couple of routes?

Even trains in London stop after midnight. The tube only runs until 1am.

However, there are plenty of nightbuses covering key routes.

And still doesn't answer the question why the second biggest city in the country with a population of ~1 million doesn't have any trains or buses running after midnight...

There are night buses which is normally enough when almost all the people are tucked up in bed. Nobody is going to run an uneconomical service for the benefit of a few workers.

If she's working the late shift could there not be another person at work who could drive her home? Say, arrange to have someone on shift who can give her a lift home and pay them some petrol money.

As I've said previously, hopefully she can use some of the money she earns for driving lessons.

Late night public transport won't run because there isn't the demand for the service and it would just be a cash sink for the companies.

Because there is no money in it?

Now that public transport is a money making adventure due to numerous rounds of privatisation, where's their incentive to lay on a service that hardly anyone will use?

... it just made me realise what a joke the government's attempts to get people out of their cars really are. /rant
The Government have absolutely ZERO genuine interest in getting people out of their cars and onto public transport or their bikes - where is the money in that?

You are just beginning to realise that in a Capitalist system where there is no such thing as society, all that matters is endless consumption and waste :(

No it isn't, why would a company run a service with little demand at a loss?

The government claim they are trying to push people out of their cars - they've been campaigning for this for ages. Surely if that's their final goal, it would make sense to ensure there is adequate infrastructure in place to deal with people's transport requirements, otherwise it's simply an exercise in futility. Subsidising night buses would be a good start?

Just to clarify, there are NO night buses in Birmingham - unless someone is able to inform me otherwise, in which case I would be very grateful :)

Like I said, it's only temporary, as we are planning to move to the area soon anyway, but in the meantime it's a right pain. :(

What do the Government have to do with the bus company not running a night service that will only benefit a few people? It's a waste of money. It would be nice to have a night bus sure, but it would need to be a viable service.

As I've said in my replies, your girlfriend can put some of her wage in to driving lessons hopefully, or arrange to work in the evenings with someone whom she can pay to give her a lift home.

If this was going to be *such* an issue, why take the job in the first place? Why not look for something closer?

Subsidies

Yes you're right, I shall ensure she gets enough driving lessons and passes her test before she starts, using the wage she hasn't yet got to pay for them ;)

The lack of night buses/trains in the Midlands is a massive pain in the behind I agree, I've had to turn down many shifts in the past because of it.
