Serious question about tectonic plates.

Bit of pedancy really, but mountain ranges aren't formed when plates 'smash' against each other, as that implies considerable speed. It's simply a matter of them pushing against each other over a very long period of time. Off the top of my head i believe Everest is several centimetres taller now than when it was first climbed.

Yes that is genuine. It was the clearest god damn water I've ever dived in.
Where the fissure opens up into a lake at the other end you can see to the other side of the lake 120m away. EPIC is an understatement.

The dive club I went with also had a camera man there and I have been badgering the travel agent once a week since I got back to get hold of those photos too and still nothing!

"North America moves westward relative to Eurasia" according to my googling

It look like fresh rock as well, although that might just be photoshop. :p
Because it's filtered glacial water it's very pure and very cold, ergo not a lot lives in the water there and nothing grows, hence it stays clear and the rocks stay clean.
You can actually take your air regulator out and have a drink if your mouth gets a little dry during the dive. Very odd feeling doing that 20m underwater!

Quality photo. It does look so so clean.

Wait til you see me doing a "Angel of the north" impression over one of the ledges into the abyss, it looked abso-****ing-lutely EPIC on the camera screen.. I have yet to see it full size though.
Giggety!

I've recently decorated my house and moved the Tv into a different position so don't have an aerial at the moment so I was ****DOH!!**** the other night when "it" was on..

"Volcano live" by teh way Perma.

Yeah ive just been told this by someone, apparently they cant invert, as there is nowhere to invert to, so the pressure forces it in the only way possible, upwards.

Dull end to an interesting thought.

The Andes are formed by a subduction zone (google it), where the Pacific plate is going under the South American plate.

Source: I have a Geology degree (undergraduate dissertation was based on mapping an extinct volcano), plus a masters in a related engineering discipline, am a Fellow of the Geological Society and have over 10 years of experience as an Engineering Geologist.

I'm a geologist and specialised a lot in tectonics at University ... I shall now invite questions from the class: shoot!

Never knew there were so many on the forum.

Slideshow anyone? Maybe we can measure some dips and strikes then touch each other in a hot shower??

Can anyone else get that website to work?

All I keep getting is "Checking services, please wait"

I've been waiting 24 hrs FFS!! ;)

lol random but yeah it works for me.
