Nokia not out of the doo doo yet

That is one of the reasons I went for it, because it wasn't just a wall of icons like the others.

ok..

Ok, so question for you. Would you have bought the single core Lumia over the dual core S2 (for example)? Looking at these forums, where tech spec is king (even if they can't really be compared, ala different OSs) that would be a negative...
Me personally, yes. I actually bought an n9 myself while I also had an s2, and if the Android project had been further along I would have kept it. The quality and feel of the n9 was far superior to the s2, the form factor was great, IMO the n9 is the best Android handset never made.

It still seems odd that Nokia can't seem to get anything right 100% these days. I bet they're mightily ****ed that mango phones won't run wp8 and the problems that will bring, just like it has for iOS and android. I still feel that wp is too little and too late to market, and though I'd love to see it do well I'm not hopeful it will be a great success...

They're livetiles....more much than just icons. :p

They are still icons no matter how MS calls them except that they change when something comes up which is exatcly what happens on iOS and android ??? Got new text? Bang little bubble by the icon with (1) and w7 actually looks like a wall of icons.. unless he was talking about app drawer in which case i dont see how its comparable

Exactly. Totally different :p

Seriously, The Metro UI is totally different to all the other mobile OS's out there. Everything from windows 7 and OSX just use a grid of icons on their desktop, so does iOS, so does Android, so does Symbian, so did Sony, Nokia, Samsung and most of the others on their dumb phones.

EDIT: Yep the iOS UI was revolutionary.... Wait... What...!

It's one of the reasons I ended up getting a WP in the end as it was just totally different UI wise to all the other phones over the last 10 years.

Not saying I dislike Metro but there is a reason why the "grid of icons" is so common. The app list on WP7 makes utterly horrible use of available space. Imagine how many "grid of icons" icons you could go on there :p

Also Symbian actually had both. You could change it to a list view (not unlike the WP7 app list IIRC) if you wanted ;)

*Edit*

Just thought! I wonder if they are actually doing away with the app list in WP8/WP7.8? Looks like the new Start screen will serve both purposes. You can have large live tiles or tiny (yet sill live) icons.

Actually, I believe Windows Phone feels more like a phone and that's why I like it. More emphasis on communication, less emphasis on doing eveything else. Also it seems better than Android on smaller screens, which I also prefer.

At least the UI is pretty consistent; one of the reasons I switched from my Desire.

I think most people are in the "oooh, look what the phone can do" camp, which isn't as impressive on the Windows Phone.

I hope Nokia can pull things around anyway :)

I think more worryingly is M$ is again talking about diversity in it's partners with WP8...so I guess Nokia might get dumped again! Now then it would be the end...

not dumped...perhaps the wrong phrase, but MS are not betting the farm on Nokia like I think Nokia wanted...
When I looked at yesterdays lowest ebb Nokia were down to $1.40. They are going to be ripe for a takeover very shortly after being one of the safest brands in the world not long ago. The continued bad news has to end however because otherwise they will just disappear!

Also I can see Navteq being spun off shortly...

It was always a rumour about MS buying Nokia, and it might happen you never know, they could probably buy them for <$10Bn now which they could afford easily enough, or wait a couple more quarters and pick them up for <$10 :p

Think this is probably unlikely though, the nokia name doesn't really mean all that much anymore and that's all you'd be getting really, they could make their own internal phone division if that's the way they wanted to go...

As for MS/WP running on RIM hardware? not gonna happen, RIM will release BBOS 10 (or QNX to everyone else) and then they'll run out of money and go bust :p
