Tracking owner of a private plate?

Has anybody done the above?
Last year there was a plate I was interested, but having no car it was pointless to buy it. And now searching for the plate it's no longer available, so guessing it's been bought.

I'm thinking of trying to contact the owner and seeing if they are willing to sell. Anybody done this and if so know how to?

I know Will Gill has done it but he sold the plate on the car.

Is the plate listed for sale on Reg Transfers or DVLA? if you know who the seller is then I dont see any harm in asking if they are interested in selling. If none of the above then im not sure how you would go about this. I dont think you can request details on a REG from DVLA that isnt your own. (Please correct if Im wrong) :D
 
I didn't actually get mine back I just bought a similar one :p

for the OP all I did was search for the plate every week using a "xxxx xxx" google search, used to throw up no results until one day it popped up :cool: then it's up to you to strike a deal, the guy I was dealing with got greedy so he ultimately missed out on an easy £700 for something with no relevance to himself, plum ;)
 
I've tried hunting my old one down (P222 PHL) after guy I sold car to decided he'd rather keep it than let me transfer it back (Will Gill v2!). It's now on a CTR, searching on a couple of owners forums shows nothing so the guy either sold it on, kept it & bought a new car or just 'gave' it to a friend/relative :(

Lesson learned!!
