7850 - any particular brand to go for?

Looking to get a 7850 but considering that there's no real reference version (which is what I normally go for), is there any particular version that I should go for or avoid?

I'm looking for the cheapest, but don't want something with a shoddy cooler. I've narrowed it down to these two models so far:

Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon 7850 860MHz 2GB PCI-Express 3.0 HDMI

XFX Core Edition Radeon HD 7850 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express

The XFX is slightly cheaper, but I don't like the look of the cooler and I've always heard people having problems with XFX hardware. I've however had many Sapphire cards in the past with no issues.

Personally after with my experience with a XFX 6850, while it was a brilliant card, the XFX cooler was LOUD. Go for the Sapphire, the cooler is much quieter. And from googling (I can see why you didn't link) I can see it has dual fans, so it will be even cooler than the XFX. Should be able to get a good overclock with that.

No, that's the best card you can get at that price range currently. Make sure you get one with a non reference cooler if you are looking to over clock, and stay away from sapphire. They seem to be getting poor results.

I recently got a Sapphire 7850 card , and it is very quiet and cool even under load.

Not overclocked it yet as on stock it is more than enough to handle Diablo 3 with max detail.

xfx uses 2 6 pin so bear that in mind, every other brand uses 1 6 pin.

just get the cheapest non reference with duel fans if possible and overclock it - just bear in mind warranty if you intend it to be a long term card.

Ive noticed the gigabyte 7870 windforce 3x oc thats on sale on ocuk for £227. Do you guys think this is worth the extra £40 over the 7850.

This graphics card is a sort of gift to someone else, and im pretty sure they wont be overclocking it. It will be going into a 3570K system (stock too).

I really dont want to spend more than £200 but if the gigabyte is decent step up (especially when overclocking is not taken into account), then I don't mind spending a litte extra.

Thoughts?

Not really. Once you get up to that price you are so near second hand 7950 prices that I would argue a 7870 is pointless (unless you insist on new of course) 7850 is a hell of a card, best bang for buck really.

Nothing wrong with the Sapphire mine is fantastic. On the other hand if someone is dumb enough to fork out more for the same card, that's up to them...

I paid £184 two months...

;)

Not many second hand 7950s for sale at the moment...

I'd go for MSI or Gigabyte for the excellent product quality and the great CS to back it up.

Between the two int he OP, sapphire>XFX

titanium, i just bought the Gigabyte 7870 too. At £220 its great value imo, only problem is i wont get my hands on it for another two weeks because im away with work :(.
