OcUK Tech Labs - Prolimatech Megahalems Rev.C "Apache Edition"

I've got a megahalem black with 2x 140mm vipers. It'll match or beat the very top end air coolers at the expense of noise. Definatly need good headphones for a decent PC experience.

The OC version with it's weaker fans will be much quieter but performance shouldn't be too far behind.

Thanks, that's really useful.

Apparently your fans max noise should be 26db, where the Apache fans are 22db... not a massive amount of difference.

With the Super Silent version with Silverstone SST-SUSCOOL121 would be 18db at load, so perhaps that is the better version to go for.

What temps do you generally run at for different use?

Thanks!

That 26db is optimistic i think, on full chat i can hear them from another room not used a proper db meter so prehaps im wrong.

As for temps,
prime is around 82
Ibt max is 95ish
Bf3 multiplayer is around 60

Using the ivybridge in sig so if you have a sandy proabably 15 degrees cooler across the board.

Thanks Asura, that's really useful.

I've been reading some reviews of my planned combination here and it doesn't sound great. Certainly not a improvement of what I could get from a standard cooler bundle.

It's a tricky balance when trying to go quiet yet still being able to do a decent stable OC.

If you want cool and quiet, take a look at the dual tower coolers from Phanteks, Noctua, Alpenfohn or Thermalright.

I have been :D
A problem I have is that I'm using the mATX form factor in a case that has 160mm cooler height clearance (Fractal Design, Define Mini)

I've been eyeing up the Alpenföhn Matterhorn Shamrock Edition CPU Cooler but there aren't really any reviews for it that I can find. From what i've seen though, it seems to be a decent size and fairly quiet.

It's not worth that kinda money. The Matterhorn is more of a mid-range cooler. Try looking for the Thermalright Venomous X. Or the K2 is 160mm tall:

Yes, I was looking at the K2 yesterday as well. It's probably the best that I could get, which would still fit inside the Define Mini. The reason I didn't mention it was because I read a fairly unfavourable review but the one you have linked to is a lot more positive. It also has good PCI clearance which is a concern in a mATX build.

Having owned a prolimatech supermega fitted with akasa vipers, i found it to be a pretty decent cooler. But it needed high speed fans to get the most out of it, ie the vipers. Theese are quite loud fans at full speed. Switched to the Alpenfohn k2, got a decrease of 3-5c in temps and a considerable drop in noise with the stock k2 fans.

sorry to hi-jack your thread, but i was just wondering, could you run 3 fans on the k2?
been lookin at this cooler for a while myself, im glad a thread popped up mentioning it :)

Providing your case has the room, yes you can indeed run 3 fans on the k2. It comes supplied with the neccesary amount of fan clips to do so.

Pic of it in my system.

oooh, i think i have room in my bitfenix outlaw if i remove the rear 120mm fan, im assuming it would give pretty good temps with the right fans too?

Tbf, the supplied fans are pretty good, though ive swapped my front one for a blue bladed alpenfohn wingboost. Purely for cosmetic reasons as it's the same speed as the supplied fan. Temp wise, in my old lian li a70f case i was seeing a max of 73c on an i7 920 @4ghz, in the shinobi xl it hits 80c but thats solely down to airflow in that case being worse. Gonna adress this by adding two 120mm exhausts in the case top, and a 120mm intake fan in the 5.25 bays.

nice, im sadly on a standard cooler at the min, my arctic pro 7 packed in and when i removed it the mounting bracket had a large crack in it
