The backplate, do you use the insulating washer on socket 1155 boards? With it the screws don't fit the screw bolts as the black insulation pillars are too high, without the rubber washer plate the metal backing plate touches the board in 2 locations and doesn't seem stable.

thanks bud. out of interest does anyone spread the thermal paste like in that vid or (if using arctic silver 5 like me) follow their own reccommendations of a 1mm wide vertical line?

You're welcome :)

Some people spread it (you often get a plastic card for this application method when you buy a tube of paste). I've seen people put their finger inside a plastic sandwich bag and use their finger to spread the paste over the CPU.

I just use a tiny dab in the centre and allow the pressure of the heatsink to spread it. When you tighten down the heatsink work from opposite corners to even the pressure being applied :)

I found the german video. It did help a little even though I was fitting AM3.

I know Alpenfohn have saved costs where they could to produce this cooler at a lower price to pass it on to their customers but the instruction sheet isn't really adequate, the diagrams are tiny.
