AMD release HD 7970 Ghz bios upgrade for Reference HD 7970 !!

LOL, nice find Boomstick777.

Round two started regarding AMD Bios flashing I see, here we go again with the 'brick your card' comments much the same as the 6950 flash bricking your card.

The article clearly states to only do it on reference cards so it's not going to brick your card with a failed flash due to the handy dual bios switch.

Nobody has to do it, it's choice remember folks.

Check above from Besty an end user who has experience of the above. Think you should check properly before making out it's zero risk when in my view an overclock carries next to no risk. Nothing stopping anyone doing both though :)

This bios uses less voltage than my stock VTX bios at 1200/1600 and is so far perfectly stable... Seems quite good so far but will give it a good game testing later tonight..

Lol spacemonkey.

In some posts here, some say people apparently don't want to overclock, but now when a simple exe can enable ghz performance-aka '680 out the box performance', you should overclock.

If you read my post again rusty, I clearly state that you can't brick a dual bios enabled gpu with a failed bios flash.:)

Besty's post advises not to go over1850mhz on the memory, personally I wouldn't go much over the 1500 MHz at all as that's the weakest link in the whole card, the memory is usually the first to pop.

He also states that 'some' of his cards are not stable with the bios memory clocks, maybe he can come back and tell us if they work individually or if this is while in CrossFire-where overclocking is a different ball game than in single card mode.

Once again, it's personal choice whether one chooses to do the bios or not, personally if I had one, I'd have done it by now.:)

Sorry if these are stupid questions. I see that Amd have also released a 7950 GHz Edition. Do you think they will do the same with theses cards? Also is this only for reference cards anyway?

Thanks

7950 GHz edition hasn't been confirmed yet. But yes I'm sure the bios will get leaked if one exists.

Ive got a question for Boomstick or anyone else running this bios:

What is the max voltage you can give with afterburner/trixx now please?:)

Help, i flashed my vtx3d 7970 bios with that tool and it failed, i then rebooted my pc and everything was dead.

luckily i have a dual bios switch on the gpu which im now using.

but now what???

can i ever use that first bios again, or can i reflash it back to stock, im a bit of a novice with new gpus

Boot to bios 2, run gpuz click on the bios chip button next to bios version and save it. Now flash that saved bios to the number 1 position. Flick the bios to number 1 (do not reboot), flash.

EDIT...so i flicked the bios switch over to the now blank one, started atiwinflash, loaded the orginal saved bios , and i get an error saying "subsytemIds mismatch"

Ok important update, after using the switch on the card to put the card back into bios 1 (without crashing pc :) i then tried flashing with the saved bios from gpuz, and also vtx3d's own bios from their site.

However and this is IMPORTANT!!!! the bad flash must have left some information in that bios even though it failed.

So all i did is try and reflash with the new GHZ bios that broke the bios originally, and it worked a treat, it just worked and asked me to re boot and its now exactly as the photos the guy posted below."

I hope this helps anyone who borked the process like myself.

And thank you for the swift reply, saved me messing about with DOS lol

thanks guys

Seemed to go ok for my ref sapphire one too. Might as well make the most of it since I am trying to RMA my Dual X and from the warranty thread it seems I won't be getting a replacement any time soon.

The 7950 can be flashed with a 7970 BIOS with no ill effects. So who's going to be the first the flash the 7970 GHz edition BIOS onto a 7950?

I have just flashed my cards and after installing the driver on reboot i get bsod (love AMD drivers) any ideas?

This bios seems to have solved all my crashing issues. Was playing for a good few hours last night and not a single problem. Also the 12.7 drivers work perfect without issues whereas if I installed them with the stock card bios I had issues with texture corruption and black screens.

So far so good but time will tell.
