Advice on car choice:

I really can't understand how people can describe the VAG 2.0TDI as even remotely refined, the house next door has one in a Passat and it sounds like a delivery van turning up whenever they drive in. Horrible horrible noise.

I thought this about my bosses car, from the outside it makes a hell of a noise. Inside though it is perfectly acceptably.

All the talk of XFs... I'd have thought the running costs would be in a different league?

They would be, but none of Castiels posts except this thread ever give you the impression he's anything other than very well off, so I cannot imagine it would be a problem.

I don't want to throw money away needlessly on performance I don't use though, on reflection I dont drive the ST now as I used to when I bought it and haven't done for years....getting older has made me more pedestrian probably...;)......I set a budget of £15k because that was what I thought was a reasonable budget for a second car and it doesn't impact our finances. If you think spending a bit more would be warranted then I am flexible.

The problem I have with the Jags is that they are all high miles and I'd rather buy from an authorised dealer than a private sale or backstreet car dealer. I am not all that enthused by Jaguars anyway (the last VW you quoted was photographed on a publoc street and given the name and lack of address for the dealer alarm bells start ringing before I have even travelled to look at it)

I can afford to run practically anything, but being able to and wanting to are different things.

The two things I definitely don't want to do is buy too far (within 50m) from where I live or buy something with over 40k miles.

I will take your advice however and we are off to look at some other dealerships in Andover, Southampton and Swindon today and I'm going to drive the TFSI for comparison, although I am definitely leaning toward a Passat CC.

Ultimately if I buy the VW (140) and find after a few months it is pants then I can always change it without incurring too much cost if I can haggle the price down with the dealer. :)

Buy a BMW 330/335i for £15k with under 60k and buy the warranty.

Found one as little as £11k the other week, that's £4k for "running costs" with trouble free motoring.

I don't particularly want to spend weeks travelling miles fussing over which engine or whether it has stuff I'll never use anyway.

Lol yeh it's only £15,000 i guess.

I think it's almost a dead cert that he's going to come back with a Passat CC 2.0TDI 140 for £15,000 today. :(

I too do not know how anyone can describe the VAG 2.0TDI's as refined. They literally sound like Transit vans. If my ears hear what everyone elses ears hear, when people deny it sounds rattley and horrible, they are simply lying.

The Passat CC does actually look pretty nice, but why you'd want to destroy it with a horrible, rattley, bottom of the range diesel engine, i have no idea.

After three weeks of driving a Volvo/PAG 3.2 I6 petrol I got into a BMW 2.0TDI 4pot... sounded soo much like a van :(, and even that's meant to be more refined than the VAG 2.0TDI.

All that says to me is that the car is well soundproofed and so imagine just how nice it would be inside with a nice quiet engine rather than something that tries to do its best impression of a slightly broken Transit :p

To be fair all 4 pot diesels sound like a rattly bag of spanners from the outside.Even the x20d from BMW.

The only remotely refined 4 pot was the old Honda CDTI, my Dtec is propper rattler :p

In terms of car choice, the CC is quite a nice looking car, certainly nicer looking than the A5 Sportback. But its still a Passhat. But if thats what speaks to you then go for it, car ownership isnt about the cars technical ability, but more about whether you feel it and if it does the job you need

Nope I didn't buy a CC. I went to Andover and test drove a 2008 A5 2.0 TFSI (£14,995), A couple of 2009 (40k + 29k) Passat CC 2.0TDI GT (170+140 and £14k and £13k) and a 2010 (37k) Golf 2.0TDI GT.

We bought the Golf for £13.5k.

As much as I like the Golf Mk6, i'm not sure I could bring myself to buy a diesel one in preference to a 2.0TFSI Audi A5.

What on earth possessed you to do that man??

To be fair the wife decided that she wanted to get a smaller car than her Range Rover while we were looking, so we went with the Golf which she prefered and I'll have the Range Rover which suits me tbh.

The Golf was a nice drive, comfortable and practical..the A5 would be a nightmare for rear space with our son who is gaining on me all the time height wise and it coes from a main dealer (the Audi was an independent, who frankly wasn't exactly helpful). We did think about buying a 1.4 TSI (158) but while a bit cheaper it had about 50k was a year older.

Everyone's happy, we feel that we have bought a good car and only time will tell if that is the case.

Thanks for the advice, I know most of you are disappointed in my choice but when we take delivery next week I'll post up some pics anyway...:)

Slightly O/T, is the Passat CC 2.0 tfsi engine the same one that's in some of the B6 Passats (select sport and SEL models I think)?
