Hey guys,

My old man pc has basically had it and rather than getting him a new board/cpu and ram i thought i'd give him my i7/Asus p6T and 6gb ram.

Now should i go for the Sandy or Ivy?

I do like a little bit of clocking and we all know Ivy is a bit toasty! It's a shame they both cost pretty much the same. Surely Sandy should be a heck of a lot cheaper?

Or, i just keep my kit and get the old man some entry level i3? At the end of the day, i play BF3 and Arma 2 and the 920 seems fine. Then at least i can get the next gen kit when the 920 starts to show her age.

Anyway, let me know what you think.
Cheers

If you don't do much you could just grab a i5 3570K rather than investing a lot of money onto a i7.

BF3 run's easily on the 3570K:)

I'd probably go for i5 next time.

Just looking at the next gen (Haswell) that looks like it'll be DDR4. Might be worth me waiting and getting the old man an i3 for now.

Indeed, what does he do with his system? A cheap SB i3 and motherboard would easily cope very well with most tasks.

He's your typical parent user. Email/ internet.

Only problem is, my mobo will only address 4gb ram for some reason, despite having 6gb.

Google "Asus p6t v2 deluxe 4gb". Looks like a common fault.

So i might need a new mobo/cpu/ram after all :-(

An i3 would be more than enough then, its what my dad uses in his laptop and desktop and commented on how fast it was just the other week when I upgraded his desktop.

Contact Asus, see what they suggest. I'd be surprised if the 3 year warranty had expired.
