The gf is Canadian and we've considered moving to Canada, which would mean we'd get married so I can get Canadian citizenship. However, I've got a best mate who lived out there for a year and would love to live their permanently. We had a few jars one night and got to wondering whether it would be possible for us to adopt him so he can come with us. What started as a joke has got us seriously thinking about this, as ridiculous as it sounds is there anything stopping us?

Me and him are both 28, although daddy (me) is a couple of months older ha

Yeah, it'll work. Nobody has thought of it before. Ever. That's why it's not illegal yet. Of all the millions of people that go to incredible lengths to live in a first world country not one of them ever thought of that jape.

Of course not. Anyone over the age of 18 is classed as an adult, therefore un-adoptable. :/

You can adopt people over 18 in most US states, just wondered if you could here. Are you actually certain you can't adopt somebody over 18 years old in the uk?

Damn :) that would have been pretty sweet! I guess he'll have to work to be eligible like everybody else. I was really looking forward to grounding him too. Thanks anyway

Either that or get your wife to set him up with one of her girlfriends :p

Does adopting someone in canada under candian law entitle them to citizenship?
Have you checked that bit?

For some bizzare reason you seem to have checked 'most US states', and not checked Canada?
Trolling or idiocy?

You used to be able to, a couple of thousand years ago. There are a few documents showing adults being adopted into families (sometimes politically, other times for compassionate reasons) - it functioned more like marrying into a family rather than a person taking care of a child (as is the common understanding of adoption).
