Advice on car choice:

I think you are confused (or i'm blind) - who said anything about it being too big to park?

You are right, I have no idea where I got that from.

I am doing about 5 things at once at this end. I think the bit where he said his wife like a smaller car and was looking at the Passat...my mind jumped to conclusion (smaller car/easier to park)

A5 is too big to park when the Passat was ok?

I have no problems parking any car, given that I used to park 44 foot vehicles all the time at one point.

No the Audi rear seating room was very tight, and totally non existent behind my driving position. It was a very nice car though, and better to drive and more spacious for the driver than the Passat.

Besides over the weekend (well today) our priories changed as my wife decided that she wanted a smaller car (having seen the Golfs and A3s no doubt) so we effectively ended up buying her a car and I take the Range Rover...I like the Range Rover so seemed a sensible thing to do, especially as she does loads of miles and I don't.

Having said that I don't know why people are beating up on the Golf, I drove it as well and it went pretty well, was very comfortable, handled well and it definitely didn't seem underpowered or noisy. For a second car it is ideal for us and don't worry our next purchase will be to replace the Range Rover and then we will be looking for a new car with a far bigger budget and everyone can spec me fast impractical and cool cars. :)

The golf is a nice car, but I think it's the fact that you had a nice budget, used to running a V6 and it's associated costs, so the chance of getting something "exotic" is easily there.

But you went for a rather ordinary golf TDI.

It's like I said before, "this will do" rather than "I can't believe I got this for £14k!"

Maybe, I wasn't really looking for something spectacular, just a second car.....however as it turned out I will effectively be driving the RR instead on a daily basis and not the Golf.

(and we can always get the Golf tuned up a bit ;))

Those are all relative, and I'd agree with you on those compared to cars in the Golf's class. It's just there are other, better classes you can buy in to for £15k :p
