Any ideas on this one? A friend has been having an issue with one of his PC’s. Luckily he has two PC’s to swap parts around with.

The symptoms are the PC monitor will randomly turn off. This can be after 1 minute or 8 hours. Sometimes it happens a lot and sometimes it will not happen for a few days. The PC itself does not reboot but to get it back working he has to reboot the PC. We have noticed when his monitor goes off he does loose internet connection (I see him leave the online game we are playing). So maybe the PC is going into standby?

I don’t have his PC specs but this is what has been tried.

Fully tested the ram
Fully tested the hard drive
Reinstalled windows (tried XP and 7)
Checked processor temps and they never go above 58 degrees even during stress testing.
Changed graphics card to a GTS 450 that is known to be working ok
Changed the power supply
Updated BIOS

When my friend uses the monitor on his second PC he does not have any issues.

Edit

PC specs are

Intel core duo E4500
Asus P5VD2-VM motherboard
Geforce GTS450
3 GB ram
250 GB hard drive
DVD writer

tried the monitor on the other working pc? could be monitor or power lead or dvi/hdmi/vga cable thats faulty?

My friend has just said he seems to hear the processor fan ramp up just before the fault occurs. As I have said though processor temps are fine.

It may be the monitor at fault. I know you have said it works fine on the other PC but it still may the monitor at fault. I had something similar once. After trying everything I tried a different monitor and the problems went away.

You need to test the faulty PC with a different monitor. Make sure when you test with a different monitor you use that monitors cables.

Trying a different monitor will take you minutes.

Actually I think it may be the monitor.

I have also suggested we reseat the CPU and apply new thermal paste.

Is surgical spirit the best for cleaning off the old thermal paste? Is there anything else you can use for cleaning the old thermal paste off?

Now I am really stuck for ideas. We tried reseating CPU and putting fresh paste on. Tried a different monitor and cables.

So this is what has been tried now

Took out CPU cleaned old paste off and applied new stuff.
