[SOLVED] Trouble Connecting XBOX 360 to PC (Windows 7)

I've been having my Xbox 360 Live connected to my PC via Ethernet for ages and was a happy lad until today where I had a problem with a PC game which, as a noob, typed my problem in Google and found a solution. It involved:

Code:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset

in Command Prompt.

Unfortunately since then my Xbox does not connect to the network (I'm not talking about internet, that will be the next step. I'm talking about the Xbox-PC connection). I have tried factory resetting my Xbox's network settings, setting the connection to Manual and Auto with no success.

EDIT1: In my Xbox's network settings, when I set the connection to Auto it identifies the following:
Code:
IP Address: 169.254.37.231
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0
DNS Server (primary): 0.0.0.0

And these are the details I get from the Network Connections in Windows

Please help me!

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: Tried using my Xbox with my brother's laptop, everything was fine. Something is going wrong with my PC's settings. Not sure what.

Something to me looks very wrong about your IP addresses.
I'm meaning the 169.254.37.231 and 169.254.196.160 Where did they come from?

Those are not my PC's local IP. It is the 'unidentified' network's (ethernet). But yes an IP starting with 169 does not look right.

The xbox isnt getting a network address so thats why its falling back to a 169. address.

Did you use Internet Connection Sharing under Windows? If so, have a look at this to set it back up again.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Using-ICS-Internet-Connection-Sharing

Thanks for the reply tribz however I have done all that and I don't think that is the problem. Correct me if I'm wrong but the problem I am having right now isn't internet sharing but the initial connection between my PC and my console:

00_network_successful.jpg

If this is the network's architecture, mine fails at the very first step (Xbox 360 --> Network)

Is the XBOX directly connected to your PC for the purpose of sharing its internet or is it connected to a switch/router? The initial problem is that it isnt being given an IP address by whatever it is on your network that dishes them out.

If you are using ICS and its not working, that would explain it failing at the first step as it cant receive an IP address.

You could also try resetting your firewall settings in the Network and Sharing centre.

Just a thought, why dont you run system restore back to before you reset the settings?

That should get you back to where you were.

The XBOX is connected directly to my PC (via Ethernet) for the purpose of sharing its internet.

System Restore didn't do anything.

I've tried resetting the Firewall settings but no luck.

I decided to Disable the Local Area Connection in Network Connections in Windows and Enable it again. I could for only one attempt connect to the network again but not to Internet (got 192.xxx IP on my XBOX network settings - that is with IP Settings set to Auto)

EDIT: Tried again and back to step one! Can't connect to the network any more. Getting 169.xxx again. :(

/sigh

SOLVED:

The problem I identified, whether I am wrong or right I leave that to the experts, is when I run IPCONFIG, the very first paragraph read:

Code:
IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

And I believe this is why I was getting errors all along. To solve:

Go to Start and search on cmd or command. Right click on either cmd or command then select Run as administrator. At the command prompt type regedit. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Tcpip\Parameters\IPEnableRouter setting, right click and select Modify. Change 0 to 1 and exit the editor. If you don't have IPEnableRouter, you can open up the registry editor, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ Services\Tcpip\Parameters path, click on Edit > New and add the DWORD and value it 1 (one).

When you're back at the command prompt type services.msc and navigate to the Routing and Remote Access service. Right click and select Properties. Change to Automatic and click on Start to start the service.

Good luck!
