lol, "What care level do you have for the critically acclaimed American TV Series THE WIRE"

1: None
2: Some
3: It's awesome
4: Not heard of it < < < this one for me

Overall television series are pretty inconsequential. But if Dallas defined a certain era and its preoccupations, its interests, its ideology... you could probably say that The Wire is a good portrait of the 00's. Boardwalk Empire isn't even focussed on the present day and is just another in a long chain of - excellently well-funded and well-produced - historical dramas. Breaking Bad doesn't nearly have the scope or ambition of The Wire's 5 seasons.

That's my last $0.02's on it. I do think if a single television series was going to define the 00's, it would be The Wire or The Sopranos.

(But again, television is hardly the most important thing)

Whilst I did actually go into a crack den in the 00's, I wouldn't say that black gangsters dealing smack, and shooting people were the defining interests or preoccupations of the 00's. Plus, wasn't the Wire & BE only shown on Sky over here? I'd say Sky viewers are in the minority.

I guess there's an interesting correlation between quiz shows (QI was the first one I thought of) and the increased availability of knowledge, and the ease of which to find that knowledge in the 00's.

You clearly missed the other 4 series of The Wire, then, which were about muckraking and analysing a lot more than street dealers and the projects.

Lady Gaga? :p

Edit:- Ah said in the first post. Still, my point stands. She's everywhere these days.

Do you think that she'll be talked about, or still around, like The Beatles/The Stones/Beach Boys/Hendrix/Madonna etc in 30 years time though? I very much doubt it.

Indeed.

But it seems rock music tends to move with the times better than pop, which (thankfully) dies as soon as it's no longer "in".

Oasis, Radiohead & a few others will be remembered in 50 years I'm sure, but pop music... nah.
