the ones that are on almost every other bridge. meaning to ask this for a while. are they measuring trafic flow? if they are even cams

They are often also linked into the police ANPR system to check vehicles for tax/mot/insurance etc.

Are you referring to the "War of the worlds" heat ray style that illuminate faint red ?

I suspect they are/have been installed in preparation for Pay by mile

Ok so... As none of you seem to know what I'm referring to I pulled the wagon over

Took a pic

Scrambled down the grass bank and took another pic

Then hung over the edge and took a close up

Happy ?

All I know is that back in 2003 when I was a naughty boy and caught by an unmarked police car doing 97.4 mph average speed over 0.5 miles - I was told that they had used two blue cameras on the side of the A34 to calculate my exact speed between them. They had been remotely activated by the police officer.

Apparently this was true as they relied on that evidence in Court and I got 6 points as a consequence of it.

EDIT - Those cameras look very similar to the pics you have posted.

Those bridge cameras are purely traffic flow. Either that, or I've been extremely fortunate over the last 150k miles and 6 years or motorway driving :)

They really aren't

when I did work for trafficmaster they went over the system and how it works with me (this was a few years back)

the cameras DO NOT record the first and last letters of the number plates, this was done on purpose so there was no question of the ompanies system being used for tracking cars..

We had some long term (2.5 years) road works on the main A-road of the city. They had these blue cameras on some of the bridges which fed digital displays saying "you are xx minutes from point B"
