In acme's chair.
So i turned on my PC and got the cold boot error 70 on the Debug LCD (happens fairly often) so i reset my CMOS and re-applied my BIOS settings (i have them saved as a default) and turned on my computer, and the USB 3.0 ports on the rear of the motherboard were not functioning correctly, the provided power to devices, but nothing else (i tried them with my mouse and keyboard, as well as a wireless network adapter, and nothing. However plugging in my Antec Soundscience bias lights worked fine)

I restarted the PC and they still do not work properly. All of the USB 2.0 ports (front and rear) work fine.

I always have my USB bias lights and my wireless adapter plugged into these ports and i have never had any issues before now.

Please help me? I am concerned about my motherboard... All the error codes etc that the motherboard has been giving me are a trait of this board and because of overclocking and voltage tweaks (lots of people have these issues with this board) so i was not too worried (annoyed sure, but not worried) but now this is worrying. I have no warranty on the board, dont worry about why, its kinda hard to explain.

noticed this:

So i tried getting windows to install the drivers:

Shoved in my motherboard driver disk and hit this one:

it then uninstalled and re-installed the drivers

It then came up with this:

But then this:

and now the ports still dont work.

ok, i went into my BIOS and enabled 'USB 3.0 LEGACY SUPPORT (XHCI)' and now they are working again...

Etron controllers are rubbish. Mine keeps losing the device every now and then, even with the latest drivers from the Etron site, so I just disabled them. My friend's ASMedia seems a lot more stable on his MSI board.

usb3 is rubbish on z68 mate. I had issues like this all the time too.

You've given that same sweeping statement before:

It's a load of rubbish on z68

I'll give the same reply:

Really?

It works fine on my P67 and Z68 motherboards.

Perhaps you have experience of the horrible Etron controller.

My motherboards have NEC and ASMedia controllers which, as I said, are fine.

The OP unfortunately has the worst controller of the three.

^I had NEC chips on the maximus iv ex-z and they were nothing but trouble. Keyboard randomly freezing/ dropping out completely, mouse flicking up vertical during gaming, wireless adapter dying, usb pen crapping out while copying files, slow transfer speeds etcetc.

Tense times when updating my bios via usb to try and fix it, even via usb2, which all worked fine. I got fed up of dangling my cables everywhere while having everything plugged into the front panel usb2 and got rid.

bios was up to date, usb3 drivers up to date, tried this:http://www.ajperysian.com/2011/12/1...z-usb-3-0-driver-issues-rear-usb-not-working/, gave up.

Edit: Probably a bit over the top to say it's 'rubbish on all z68' i guess, but I'm pretty ****ed off tbh because I have a £300+ motherboard that isn't stable enough to use for gaming or uni work. If I RMA it my luck would be that the board wouldn't display the fault, and if I sold it it definitely would eventually. Feels like I'm stuck with it

That doesn't mean that "USB3 is rubbish on z68".

Perhaps the implementation of USB 3.0 "With 2 x VIA SuperSpeed USB hub controllers" caused your problems.

:)

Try the 2 red USB 3.0 ports on the rear I/O panel.

They don't seem to be connected to the VIA hubs.

I am having tonnes of problems with this motherboard, i hate it and i want it gone NOW!

But i cant really afford to buy a new one just yet... I could nab a B grade Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 for £40 if they come in stock (assuming that when they do the price doesent shoot back up) but the prospect of rebuilding my PC isnt a nice one... Did you know that i have never applied thermal paste? :p it would be the first time i had to do that

^^^ Already replaced it with the z77a-gd65. Much nicer looking board imo. Might try and offload the maximus to my younger brother along with my 2700k if ocuk start selling lid-flipped ivybridge chips.

Losing of USB ports etc is an indication of an unstable overclock. This is usually solved by adjusting PCH voltages. Give this a try.

Its dropping ports randomly because of instability.

Doubt pch would help as its not part of the actual chipset and other devices would likely fail if it was the pcie bus going stupid, its a matter of it being the most horrible implementation of USB 3.0 controllers i.e Etron. Any board with Etron controllers immediately gets a NEC or Asmedia based pcie card in my builds.
