Wow, we all know the benefits of exercise but a report published in the Lancet that investigated the detrimental effects of inactivity has come to the conclusion it is attributable to ~9% (average) of non-communicable diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, breast and colon cancer.

Researchers said the problem was now so bad it should be treated as a pandemic.

I haven't read the whole Lancet article, just the summary, but I guess this must be strongly linked with bad diet and the obvious obesity issues that result too.

It is recommended that adults do 150 minutes of moderate exercise , such as brisk walking, cycling or gardening, each week.

The main problem is the modern world facilitates a sedentary lifestyle, we drive everywhere, a lot of people sit all day at computers at work then sit at computers/tv at home. You end up having to exercise as a specific thing to do, which people either don't have time or motivation to do.

Anyway, just going out for my regular 6am brisk walk!

I changed jobs a few years ago and now rarely walk anywhere. I've certainly put on some weight as a result and im trying to do something about it in the gym.

I do 7 x 5K runs at 20 to 21 minutes each which means I'm not hitting the guidelines

Yeah, but running probably falls outside the category of "moderate exercise" if they class that as brisk walking or gardening, especially if you're pulling sub 7 minute mile pace!

I've been trying to get more active myself. An office job is cushy, but you do turn into a potato if you're not careful.

I plan to go for a 15-30 minute brisk walk every day eventually. I'll go up from there gradually :)
