Hey all,

I'm trying to build a kick ass office PC for my accountant Dad.
Bunch of requirements:
  • Hella fast, no waiting for the plethora of apps he'll have open on any given day.
  • Loads of USB ports available.
  • Quiet as possible.
  • A decent base for future upgrades if needed in a few years.

He'll be running Win 7 Ultimate, already has another 60GB SSD and 1.5Tb HD.

I've had some help from Doomedspeed already but have swapped up the mobo, RAM, CPU.
Just want to check:
  1. I'm not buying anything that's not compatible, or that won't fit in the case.
  2. I'm not overlooking better alternatives or overspending for negligible gains.

Here's what I've come up with.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £259.99
1 x IIyama Prolite B2776HDS 27" Widescreen LED Business Monitor - Black £249.95
1 x Crucial RealSSD M4 256GB 2.5" SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Hard Drive (CT256M4SSD2) £191.99
2 x Corsair Vengeance Low Profile 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CML16GX3M2A1600C10) £109.99 (£219.98)
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £82.99
1 x OcUK Tech Labs - BitFenix Shinobi USB3.0 Midi-Tower Windowed Case - Black - Noise Dampened £79.99
1 x Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 500W '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £54.98
1 x Logitech Performance MX Mouse with Darkfield Technology (910-001121) £38.98
1 x Gelid Tranquillo CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2/AM2+/AM3/LGA775/LGA1155/LGA1156/LGA1366) £25.99
1 x Dell USB Keyboard Black with Smart Card Reader £24.98
1 x Samsung SH-S222BB/RSMS 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black/Silver/Biege) - Retail £17.99
1 x Antec Soundscience Halo 6 LED Bias Lighting Kit £9.98
1 x Gelid Solutions GC-Extreme Cutting Edge Thermal Compound (3.5g) £8.99
1 x OcUK Professional 2.5" to 3.5" SSD Adaptor Plate - Black £3.49
Total : £1,286.78 (includes shipping : £13.75).

Feedback greatly appreciated!

Oh and the monitor I picked, is this offer better enough to warrant the extra cash? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-086-IY

Hmm, thermal paste.

Its not really needed as the Gelid has a tube of gunk supplied with it.

But if you did want some extra paste, I can think of better alternatives.

And I dont think you need the SSD adapter either.

Just noticed.

You have selected the "core" edition, you need to add the front logo/mesh on top of the price.

Front of the case, the bitfenix logo and mesh strips that run up the side of the case are changeable to different colours. The 'Core' edition of the case doesn't come with any front badge or side mesh, you would have to buy them separately. A non-core edition (standard or what ever it may be) will come with the above mentioned parts.

Gotcha, context is king! Randomly they sell the non-core version for the same price but don't mention / show it any differently.

Do you have an idea of what exactly it is your dad will be doing on the machine? as in what programs he will be using etc..the main components are key to this.

If you want to trim the price I would look at a 3570K over the 3770K and 8GB/16GB of memory over the 32GB. But again this is dependant on what he is using the machine for.

IMO if he has uses for 8 threads and all that memory you might be better looking at the X79 platform.

He was quoted about £1200 for a spec a third of the one I put forward to you guys, so there's a degree of getting the best spec for the money in here too. The 3770k and RAM is as much for longevity as anything.
Does he need all 8 threads? I doubt the apps he uses daily are optimised for multithreading anyway but you never know.

Personally I'd ditch the 32GB of memory in that case, very few people will come close to even touching that. How about a nice 8GB 1600mhz kit (2 x 4GB), that leaves you the future option to bump it up to 16GB should you need it saving about £190 in the process.

Well it sounds like other than a few cost cutting options, there are no alarm bells.
Thanks for the help guys! You're the reason this forum rocks!

NP, and if you ever want to get more speed from that chip, drop the integrated graphics in favour of a low budget dedicated card like a 5450 or similar and start cranking up that multiplier :)
