Virgin Media Discussion Thread

My post was just a post in general that the firmware was for out now for groups other than 100mb packages. Tho i have just tried to get it and i cant i have tried 3 times once 5 mins once 10 mins and once 20 mins. :(

Tho Mason can you not get some cat5 cable and just stick some around the rooms edges and have the end somewhere for easy access where you would use your lappy?

I would love to, however I'm a 19 year old at university, and I'm at home at the moment (summer holidays) and my mum hates cables as it is. I doubt she would be very happy if I ran a cable around the room.

Wouldn't be easy anyway, to put it where I use it would need to go up and around a door frame :/.

So frustrating.

Had the R36 update with high hopes.

playing games is pretty much impossible on the superhub, don't really want to fork out for a separate router but I will if I have no choice.

Fortunately you can do it quite cheaply, for example DIR-615 for a tenner from auction sites if you are patient. Got mine that way, originally Virgin supplied but never used, still in the box. That is my set-up, superhub in modem mode with the DIR615.

DIR-615 only has FastEthernet ports so if you're running 100Mbit or over it's not the best choice.

It doesn't have gigabit ports, no. I'm 100% wireless so I rarely use those ports.

I turned my router off and on again today, and got the new R36 firmware.
You'll get even worse speeds over wireless...

I think the DIR615 can only support ~60-80mbit on its WAN port anyway.

I get the full 60Mb speed of my connection over wireless. If I upgrade to 100Mb, I won't actually care about getting 100Mb, 60 is more than enough as it is. I'd be doing it for the extra upload, which I should get OK with my existing setup. But as pointed out above, the 655 is just a little bit more expensive than the 615.

But still doesn't have 100mbit+ throughput on the WAN port...

Jus phoned cancelations and asked for the upgrade as new customs can get 100mb why can’t I? I was prepared for a row, but the guy on the phone was great, he started by saying It’s not just a flick of a switch as engineers need to upgrade the infrastructure, he then said hang on, I’ll try…he said it can be done, it’ll take about 24 hours…while I was on the phone I ran speed test and got 92mb! (I was getting 24mb as I’ve hit my limit (Steam Sale))…turns out it is a flick of a switch.

An engineer is coming round on Friday with a Super hub, as I’ve got “Ambit modem”, are the Superr Hub's OK now? The Ambit modern is plugged into the old Netgear WNR2000 router then into a gigabit switch, am I better with the Super hub > Switch?

(edit its not a Ambit modem, its the one before the super hub)

Cheers

After reading these posts I’ve come to the conclusion that I might as well have the Super Hub and can always put it in modem mode if the wireless performance is horrific, the only Wireless devices I have are Android Phones and Tablet (all PC’s are hard wired)

Does this sound sensible?

The wireless is bad but what you suggest makes sense. My main issue is that the performance of it seems to degrade until it needs a full on reboot, quite odd.

R36 claims to sort Blizzard Downloader and maybe my other issues, we will see about that, it (Torrent download issues) have plagued me for years.

What kind of torrent download issues?

Both Blizzard downloader & many different private trackers as well as TPB have worked flawlessly for me, even with the superhub. Have been able to easily max out connection speed.

It's only started happening the past few months but they changed something in the Blizzard Downloader and when it tries to connect it will often crash the router and it will automatically restart.
