So copying Frozo's thread - any OCers members live in Fife and if so what is the internet like there? I have just accepted a job in St Andrews and I am looking at moving to Anstruther or a similar coastal town. Maybe Cupar. I have noticed that there is no cable there

Any advice on schools, towns etc would be handy as well.

My dad stayed in a cottage near Cupar, pretty much opposite Fernie Castle. Cupar seemed like an OK place, the pubs aren't amazing but it's got all the local amenities that you need.

I only ever used his internet for basic browsing, and chatting rather than downloading and games but it was perfectly competent for that. However, I wouldn't be sure it would hold up to much gaming.

Not really sure I've been much use here. :p

I'm sure the internet will be perfectly fine in the towns, he was up two dirt tracks in his cottage.

We're not as backwards as some like to think up here!

Internet is fine. All depends on whether or not your new street us cabled or not. For example I can get 120mb virgin.

If you want guaranteed fibre then kirkcaldy has it. 40 minute commute to st andys though.

Edit. Schools. It all depends. Cupar has Bell Baxter high school which is ok. Primarys vary. However anstruther and st Andrews are the most expensive in the region. If you can afford it then great
depends how far you want to travel really. Saying that its not that far.

kirkcaldy is a bit too far really. I can afford a descent place in Anstruther and the surrounding area. I am struggling to find anything in St Andrews. I need a 4 bedroom house as well so it is difficult. Plus my Wife will only be satisfied with a traditional style building. Looking at around £800 a month rent.

In Glenrothes the net is mostly virgin up to 120mb when rolled out. Some areas such as balfarg are not cable. Glenrothes is a bit dodgy depending on area and is about 40mins away like kirkcaldy maybe a bit less.
Little villages along the cost are mostly shared exchanges and hardly any of them have virgin. Fife in general is not great.

Completely irrelevant to what you're asking but, when I saw your thread I thought mine had been renamed haha :p

I'm in a little town near Glenrothes & I get the Virgin 100 meg (or 120 ) so it's pretty good. It takes me about 35 mins from my house to the anstruther chippie. I think it's about the same from my house to St Andrews, maybe just a little less than 35 mins though.

Dundee or somewhere around there would be a similar 30 ish minutes to St Andrews I would guess, Dundee usually gets the broadband roll outs first too :(

By the sounds of it I am going to be stuck on the shared exchange as my wife is now dead set on moving into a fishing village on the southern coast of Fife.

I have been told that my part was getting the job, she gets to pick the house

No I just nicked the idea :D - in between jobs so I have nothing better to do than sit playing on the forum all day.

Is it really that cold? I was told it isn't by a taxi driver when I was there for my interview. My poor heating bill is big enough :p

Given there is not much shelter from the NE wind in Anstruther I would suspect it can be chilly. Drier than the rest of Scotland though....

It can be quite cold in the exposed parts (do we call them glens if they are that far south?), and the wind can have a nip to it in the winter but it's not that bad. Fife is still quite far south.
Plus, a lot of the older houses and cottages will still have working fire places which are absolutely terrific (and cheap to fuel) at heating your house. I'd definitely put proper fire places on the list of house must haves!

But then he'd have to live in Dundee! Oh the horror.

Well I am actually from the north east so I am use to that wind. I remember many lovely summer days freezing on the beach.

See the link above, the house we are going for has fire places in most rooms. My wife couldn't wait and has already rang them and hopefully got them down to £750. No idea if that is cheap or not but as much as I tell her, she is refusing to wait.

Also, any city is a no no, I have had enough of city living in Nottingham. It is nice don't get me wrong, but I like it peaceful!

your not gonna have much luck cable wise unless you are prepared to move to one of the larger towns, i know people who live in crail, and internet is **** there, i wouldnt hold much hope for anstruther which is a few miles away.

I will live with it. As I say, I'm not willing to move to a large town or city.

7.5 Mb speed from BT, or so they say. It will all most be like living in the stone age :p

You can come to KDY for a pint then, we'll show the ropes.

Fife as a whole suffers with being so open and so close to the sea. It's a happy medium I would say. When it rains, it rains. When it snows, it snows and when it's windy, it's windy. But when the sun is out and shining and you go for a drive it's a nice place to potter about.

I'm assuming by the 4 bedrooms you have kids. There is plenty to do around and about to keep them amused. Nearest cinema is in St Andrews, the deer centre is at Cupar, Secret bunker etc. St Andrews is a great place to spend a lazy Saturday. Like others have said Dundee isn't too far away, neither is Kirkcaldy or Edinburgh for that matter.

£800 a month for that property in Anstruther is pretty much spot on, it's a popular place to live (and the fish n chips are AMAZING) Obviously once you get your foot in the door you can try and buy a house which will reduce that bill.
