Does windows 8 bring anything to PC Gamers?

Well, if the ribbon UI is on by default, and it looks like that, then clearly the design team should be shot. It looks horrendous.

it's a simple single click on the down arrow on the menu bar, so i cant see how it matters either way really. You either have it full size or you don't. You haven't really answered my question though?

why doesn't it work ?

You are, in fact. As you mentioned steam, the last steam survey said only 15% of users are on windows xp/xp64. Windows 7 has an overwhelming majority of 69% of steam users.

You misunderstood the point I was making, I'm talking about the games:

I said:

"Have a look at the titles people are buying to play from steam, Amazon and so on, I'm not in a minority."

In response to:

"Fair enough if you are in a minority who only plays old games"

Can't speak for Win8 but I don't have a massive issue with the ribbon once you get used to it, in Outlook 2010 for example I have the main ribbon minimised and just have custom quick buttons at the top of the window (New Email, Reply, Reply All, Forward, Delete, Print etc). I can bring it out if I need it.

In short I don't mind stuff like this if is is customisable, I am quite a minimalist and like to make best use of space and the modern version of office are actually better in that regard.

oh i see, my mistake :) nothing wrong with using XP either, you miss out on the spangly dx11 effects but tbh.....i could live with that. I game on windows 8 but that's because i have one pc that I'm constantly tinkering with, so I game on whatever OS i have on at the time.

If you have to hide the ribbon UI to make it look good, then it doesn't work.

I will get it once it's been out for a while, but given that I've literally only seen those screenshots, then I'm not overly excited.

its an option not an order.

i been using it off and on for 6months now, if the final build allows people to easy turn the old start menu on i think everyone will love it

it has some nice little touches and i honestly just kept using it because one game i play tribes run faster on it than on win7, tho that might been more down to the drivers at the time

and i guess that will most likely be the deciding factor to push a lot onto it the updated drivers etc

i think it does handle memory better too it seems to reclaim it faster etc, its for sure not a vista, its fast ^_^

tho i tried to install it on a old laptop a duo and it said my cpu was not compatible, i had the developer preview running on a netbook so that was a bit weird

anyway october it goes in a box, if they try force us to use metro i might start hating microsoft too :p

But how does that stop it working?
I didn't say it did. My issue is the design, by nature is non-consistent and poorly implemented.

Anything you have to hide, just serves to highlight how poorly thought out it is. Look at the icons etc., there's multiple styles, stacked options and a lot of wasted space. That's poor.

Wow. A lot of hate for a comment about the UI. Doesn't stop it being a terrible design choice.

Lol, Im still on XP. But got Vista on a dual boot for DX10/11 games.

The day DX9 games are no longer made, is the day I move to Win 7 or whatever is the main Windows at that time.

My intention is not to be rude:

SR3, Alan wake (both), Batman AA, Skyrim, FSX, DoW, Deadspace, Dirt ... . All play very well, and look good. Have a look at the titles people are buying to play from steam, Amazon and so on, I'm not in a minority. You speak like I don't know whats out there tech wise, or what Windows 7 has to offer in general, that is not the case. I'm heading towards 50 and consider myself a mature gamer, I don't get into the must buy new releases because their new and I must play them now mentality, like many other gamers on this forum, when the system no longer does the job it will be replaced. And why I seemed rude when I replied was just a case of mild irritation, I stated I had a windows 7 system, don't you think I would have put it on my gaming system if I felt it was required; It just seemed like you where being an opportunist and slacking of XP because that's the thing to do. But, if you found my response rude then all I can do Is offer you an apology.

Fine, XP suits YOU better. But for the majority of gamers it's not up to the job. I understand that your comment was only talking about your personal setup and not making a statement about the wider PC gaming community so really we're arguing about nothing :)

What I was trying to say is that there is a reason that the majority of PC gamers use windows 7, and the reason is that it is simply better than XP. However if you only use the system for things which are compatible with XP, and you're happy with the performance etc which obviously you are, then that's cool.

The day DX9 games are no longer made, is the day I move to Win 7 or whatever is the main Windows at that time.

Yeah, this will be the killing blow for XP for gamers. I guess it'll happen when the new consoles are released probably next year.

What are the drivers like for it James? Will most things run on a new machine with Win 8 as the only OS? Building a new machine and haven't got a Win 7 I can use so was going to use Win 8 free for a month or so till next payday..

I heard about the cheap upgrade option, is that from all previous OS's? And it's £15? I'm still on Vista at home but will upgrade if it's cheap.

With regards the UI, the last time I installed one of the preview builds you could reg hack the metro interface away and it looked identical to win 7.

Personally I'll be giving win 8 a miss.

I don't think Winodws8 bring all that much to gamers but it does have some features for more heavy users such as better copying controls, merging of multiple hard drives, better backup system (if anyone uses that...), lots more play with multi monitor setups and improved task manager to track where your resources are going to name a few.

But with that comes Metro UI which is great for tablet and general consumers but maybe not so much for the hardcore users who like things rough around the edges but work how they want it to work :D

Makes me laugh that people still cling on to XP.. 7 is faster and nicer to look at, even if you can't afford it, doesn't take much to download a copy.

Don't know why people are still on XP, it's severely dated now and there is no need for it anymore, do yourselves a favour and upgrade to Windows 7.

I'd definitely rather use a legitimate copy of XP than a dodgy copy of 7, speaking from someone who hasn't used XP for a very long time.

It always surprises me that so many years on there are so few dx10/11 exclusive releases. I'm sure someone is going to quote Just Cause 2 or something at me, but the truth is dx9 is still the 'norm' for most big releases.

I watched a 20 minute long video on W8 and i really dont like the look of it, To me it looks like its moving closer to the apple scene which im not to fond of.

I will be upgrading at launch.

Nothing to do with games though, I just like the O.S.

There are some parts I dislike but on the whole, it seems to be a responsive, reliable O.S.

For an as yet unreleased O.S, I find it is in a better state than prior Windows versions at the same stage of their life cycle.

Cos of the xbox360 being DX9 only

Was that the presentation by the dude who had like 8 different tablets/laptops all running it? x86 and ARM together. That's the video I watched and I thought it looked really good. Perfect for a table OS, and bear in mind that as a desktop user, you don't have to use metro at all. It's just your start menu.

Personally the only time I use the start menu currently is for search and shut down, and both of these work in exactly the same way in windows 8. I'm sure most of the people complaining about it would have no problems once they actually see how it works.

Then again, people just like to complain. Especially when it's the latest bandwagon.
