FAO: People who live in Fife

Not from Fife but my folks have a lodge up in Crail which is a beautiful little village, been going up there for 25 years.

Would definitely recommend taking a drive around the whole East Neuk to get a feel for it.

How old are the kids? Anstruther is ok but at weekends it is really busy with tourists invading the harbour, its quite a busy road at the front of the house that your mrs has shortlisted.

I think if i was moving up there with my family I would seriously consider Elie.

Its a really quiet village, lovely beach, sports club, lots of golf and also a watersports club. You're also about 5 miles from Anstruther and 11ish from St Andrews. I imagine rent there would be quite pricey however.

Anstruther has a nice harbour and a good chippie so if you like harbours and fish and chips then you'll be fine.

Um, that's the only positives I can think of.

Fife is also good for furry boots.

You will love Fife - it's beautiful and peaceful and Anstruther is a crackin wee village with the best Fish and Chips.

Apparently TalkTalk have LLU there (the only one) so you may be able to get 20mb broadband or so?

Cheers for all the replies - I haven't had chance to respond yet but I will tomorrow and will add more detail. Looks like we are going up there for the week end next Friday anyway to have a look around. I only had a few hours to wander around St Andrews on my interview day and I mainly got attacked by seagulls.

Anstruther has the award winning chippy.

its not that good :( the Jolly Friar in kirkcaldy is better imo.

There are some bits of Glenrothes that are nice but in all its a horrible new town. Wemyss towns are ok as far as i know but i've only lived in Kirkcaldy. Virgin is good here but not sure if theyve upgraded further out.

Watch out for the students in St Andrews. They're terrible on every level. Expect monocles, top hats and britches. I wish I was joking.

I may struggle with this given that I will work in the Uni.

Christ no - the JF is too variable (sorry, if you own it) - nearly every other chippie in Kirkcaldy is better - Valentes, Pauls etc..

There is a reason why you can walk into JF and never have to queue and have to queue for an hour at Anstruther

Chemistry, so on the edge of the main city. I won't have too much to do with the students apart from a few 4th years each year. It is possible I will have to teach in undergrad labs, not sure.

The kids range in age from 1-12 years old. We are going to pop up there this weekend for a drive around and check out all of the villages. I had a look at Elie and I must admit, the beach does look better but I can't find anything in my price range.

As for the house, for the money it seems to be the best I am going to get. For anything a similar size I would have to add £300 ish or go to a poorer area.

You can come to KDY for a pint then, we'll show the ropes.

Fife as a whole suffers with being so open and so close to the sea. It's a happy medium I would say. When it rains, it rains. When it snows, it snows and when it's windy, it's windy. But when the sun is out and shining and you go for a drive it's a nice place to potter about.

I'm assuming by the 4 bedrooms you have kids. There is plenty to do around and about to keep them amused. Nearest cinema is in St Andrews, the deer centre is at Cupar, Secret bunker etc. St Andrews is a great place to spend a lazy Saturday. Like others have said Dundee isn't too far away, neither is Kirkcaldy or Edinburgh for that matter.

£800 a month for that property in Anstruther is pretty much spot on, it's a popular place to live (and the fish n chips are AMAZING) Obviously once you get your foot in the door you can try and buy a house which will reduce that bill.

KDY = Kirkcaldy I assume :) Is the drinking there any good? St Andrews didn't seem to have much around.

There does seem to be a lot to do. Mainly, I want to be by the sea so I can take up some water sports again - kayaking, scuba diving etc.

21CN upgrade is due for Oct 2012 so you may get upto about 20MB or so - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/ESANS

Nice one - I will ask when I sort out the phone line.

I do like fish and chips and the sea - does that count. Mainly I just want a nice big house for the family and a beach close by with stuff to do.

Fife is also good for furry boots.

Are furry boots a requirement for living there?

I had a look at talktalk. I couldn't see any link to a estimated speed. Are TalkTalk any good these days, I would have assumed they are bad and hence, the latency will be poor, which is perhaps more important for games than the actual speed.

A few other options for housing

Crail £850 and only one public room http://www.fifespc.co.uk/property-s...Address=&StartRow=1&PageNum=1&PropertyID=2792

St Monans £795 - again only one public room but it is in the harbour which may be nice http://www.fifespc.co.uk/property-s...ddress=&StartRow=1&PageNum=1&PropertyID=11848

Cupar £695 - a lot cheaper and it is big. The garden is very nice, but it is not near the sea.

Boarhills £825 - this one looks very nice but it isn't near the sea. ".... 3.5 acres of woodland and lawned garden....."
