ok im thinking of getting one there was a buying guide recently in one of the magazines if been into WH Smith recently on a couple of occasions looking for it and cant find it i think i saw it on a car magazine email advert but cant find the magazine any ideas ??

i would like a copy of the mag so i can do a bit of research on them

not sure if i will go for a B5 or a B7 depends on finances tbh #
ofc i would prefer a B7 but not just yet im thinking research now buy later in the year

That's last month's edition of Car magazine. Was about the new one, so unless you've got epic budget and want to buy brand new (and wait a while) then you'll want a used, slightly older one.
Hopefully Housey will see this thread and help you out.

cheers thx i need a copy no i want a b5 or b7 looking around 15-20 k absolute max. really cant justify any more than that and itll take a while to get that sorted tbh

i d rather wait 12 mths and get a b7 but you know what its like when u get itchy fingers

Those 2.7 twin turbo estates are a bit long in the tooth now. Nice though.

I'd go B7 or drop down to B6/B7 S4 for 80% of the power, similar spec. with less than 80% of the cost.

Of course an S4 will never feel as special as an RS4 but that's the price you pay.

If you're finding it hard to decide between the B5 or B7 based on finances then forget the B7. My brother has one and it is capable of throwing up huge bills; his has had over £10k of work done to it in two years.

£10k!! What went wrong?

Not £10K expensive in 2 years they're not, or in 4 come to think of it...

very easy to rack up 10k of bills in 24 months of ownership on a high performance car with nothing major breaking

couple of sets of tyres at a grand a pop
discs and pads from Audi are north of 2k a set
add in any small problems and a few services iirc and you can see why someone could rack up 10k of bills in 2 years, obviously mileage dependant if you like everything done by a main dealer

can of course do a lot of the above cheaper if you want i'm sure Housey will be able to fill you in on his costs and failing that check our rs246 forums

personally i'd recommend looking at an s4 :)as mentioned above 80% of the car with 50% of the bills but I can imagine you would always have that lust for what you could have had.

oh plenty of mods out there too if that's your thing check out the likes of MRC if you want either a b5 or b7 with bonkers power figures.

Well I am basing my knowledge on running a B7 RS4 for 4 years.

then you will obviously know nothing on these cars is cheap and things can and will break occasionally. running costs are one thing, but when something breaks on an RS4 it tends to rape your wallet

Such as? It would take a lot of serious breakages of serious things to get to £10k in 2 years, not least when you remove running costs from the equation such as tyres and fuel, which would be much the same on any car like this.

I suspect I did more miles in a B7 RS4 than anyone else in the UK based on the fact mine seems to be the highest mileage car I've seen for sale in the UK and my biggest bill was brakes and I ran my car without a warranty for 2 years. If you buy a well prepared car, say my old one purely as a working example, which has brand new Conti's all round, new disks all round and new pads all around it is highly likely it will only need fuel and tyres in most owners lives as most do less than 12K miles per year. The other bits spent on the car to make it like new were rads £800 and reversing sensors £400 and maybe about £300 of 'bits' to make it like new.

Sorry but having run many cars like this before it too your running costs are very very much worse case and highly unlikely and as you rightly say, I DO know about these things. :)

...and the suspension DRC is now able to be refilled successfully so the big bills of maybe £1600 to fit 4 news ones has changed too now.

your car was/is a cracking example out of interest what price did the dealer put it up for?

and for the OPs benefit can you extend the Audi warranty continuously? might be worth looking for one with one in place then paying £1200 a year or whatever the cost is currently to keep it covered
