I'm looking at updated my early 2011 13" MBP.

Can anyone recommend me a decent hard drive (500Gb or 750Gb) and RAM?

Thanks. :)

I'm not sure about the Hard Drive, but for the RAM upgrade Cruical is what you want. It's guaranteed compatible with your model of Macbook Pro.

I can definitely recommend a Seagate Hybrid XT 500Gb or 750Gb. I couldn't quite do without the storage space so it was a good compromise and with ML installed it is still plenty fast!

I've read a couple of posts around the internet saying this HD has some compatibility issues with the MBP/Mac OSX, have you had any problems?

Have you considered getting an SSD and mounting it in the ODD bay if you need capacity too?
Otherwise the Momentus XT's are far better than a regular drive and work just fine.

Pretty much as everyone else has said, you might as well grab a Momentus XT unless you are willing to go the optical bay route.

As for memory, grab any quality, branded 8GB kit that meets the specifications. I personally went Crucial as they were available at a very good price from OcUK (the price has gone up since but it may be that the RRP or wholesale prices have risen), but just look around for the cheapest shop that sells compatible memory. There is nothing in particular that is better than the rest. Some will say 1600MHz memory is a good move, however, there is usually a premium there that isn't worth it unless you are gaming on the system.

I upgraded my mac and the wife's macbook pro a couple of weeks with crucial too. Dead easy and no probe with them at all.

Well, i say dead easy, my mac was just 2 screws, the macbook pro was like 12

Can't the SSD install into the normal HDD bay if you wish to keep the optical drive?

Well I will definitely be going down the Crucial route for the RAM but still unsure about the hard drive, whilst the Momentus Hybrid XT does look good there are far too many reports of it having problems with OSX around the net for my liking.

Use a Momentus XT on mine and it made a mahoosive difference to the MBP's performance. Boot and general performance was instantly snappier.

I too had heard of issues under OSX but mine (touch wood) has been flawless for the 6+ months its been in there.

Any issues would be because of older firmware. I was running on the SD25 firmware but once I upgraded to SD28, it ran even better again. I've honestly had no faults with it. It's like anything that had initial issues but are later fixed, bad news spreads much more quickly than good news.

I went from a 750Gb Scorpio Black to a 750 Gb Momentus XT - seems to be a bit speedier.

But increasing RAM from 8Gb to 16Gb was a bigger improvement for me.
