Virgin Media Discussion Thread

woohoo, finally just had my speed doubled to 100meg :D

what's the deal with upload though - should i get a free bump to 10 meg?

Upload bumps apparently aren't happening yet for most. The only way to get it early atm is to phone retentions so you get through to the UK and convince them to change your broadband code from the xxl100 to the old 100bb one. The 100bb one is for the old 100mb package before the doubling started and puts you on 10mb upload as soon as they change the config. Same price as the new 100mb anyway.

Probably be hard to get them to do it with only just having been doubled but they did it quick and simple for me the other day when i told them i should have been on that code since april (was just bluffing my way through the call).

Phoned once today and the guy on the phone wouldn't do it, might try again tomorrow...

Ever since getting the new FW for the superhub and restoring back to defualt settings ive been unable to get Steam program to connect to the network, i get the message, to run steam you must be connected to the internet, but i am. Any ideas??

Hello.

Quick question - how bad is the traffic shaping on virgin? We were looking at getting 60 Mb internet (the TV and stuff are all of little interest).

What about "peak hours" 5pm-9pm or whatever it is?

In Oxford if it's a localised thing and there are any customers in the area.

i get this atm
on a 30 meg connection no idea when we get our update but what can i expect realistically

I thought the 30mb package was one of the double speed ones? If so you won't be upgraded.

You can login to your virgin media account and it will tell you. Mine currently says:

You're up and running on one of our new double speed packages.

Imho its fine. To avoid traffic shaping you can use SSL on port 443 for newsgroups and get full speed. Not sure if traffic shaping ends at 9pm or 12 though.

I think the only thing you need to look at is this

Basically downloading over 5gb between 4pm and 9pm will limit your speed to 30mbit for 5 hours.

Downloading more than 10gb between 10am and 3pm will also limit you to 30mbit for 5 hours.

Just got my 30-60 upgrade :)

Noticed the checker on the website had changed from "July onwards" to "December to May". Called up VM to say I was less than happy with this and the nice lady checked and said I could have the free upgrade now :)

That'll do nicely :)

Oh FFS. I've now been hit with the R36 update and my speeds have now halved. 35mbs 1.5mbs upload and a whopping 35ms ping. I'm going to phone Sky tomorrow and see what they can quote me.

Yes! Its a firewall issue I think. Check the firewall setting in the superhub. If they are on then try disabling and trying again. If it works then reactivate the firewall and drop the security down from high to medium and try again. If no joy change to low and it should work ok on low.

Or just leave the firewall off :)

Cheers mate - that's good to know.

Any downsides to having less stream channels available compared to the superhub?

None. The old 20Mb modems used to run on DOCSIS 3 with one downstream whilst the other DOCSIS 3 modems used 4 but would still be on 20Mb.

All it will do is bond 4x30Mb channels together rather than bonding 2 lots of 4x15Mb channels. (Channel bonding works in multiples of 4)

I said this earlier in the thread. Give it a few days to settle in. I received my firmware update the first week. For 2 or 3 days it was a bit ropey. I was getting 50 - 100Mb.

I had thinkbroadband monitor set up and it showed my line was perfect and latency was as good as ever but speeds were down sometimes.

After a few days the speeds levelled back out and all was perfect. If they don't settle by the end of the weekend it could be that you hub didn't take the update well.

I have actually reported this issue to my local senior techs for it to be looked into but not sure how far up the chain it has gotten

Excellent. Cheers.

That's not traffic shaping. Traffic shaping is where VM see newsgroup traffic or P2P traffic and it gets dumped as low priority

then what happens? speeds get halved?

I'll give it until Monday morning to settle. I'm just getting hit with more and more hiccups these days. I used to recommend virgin on the fact I very rarely had any issues at all. Maybe a weeks downtime in the 8 years I had been with them before moving house.
