Just ordered another OCUK GTX680 and they've sent me a Palit one, my 1st was an inno3d (which was also bought as a Ocuk version), i've now found out the Palit is non reference, but I already took the heatsink off and started fitting the block, main question am i now ****ed because i took the heatsink off? or can i return it for a reference card.

doubt you will have issues. The warranty stickers are not over the coolers for this reason. I've never had to return a card to retailer but EVGA honuored warranty on my 580 last year I had opened that up.

Another plus is that if you are returning to get another card shouldn't be an issue. How do you know the card is not ref?

I'm really tempted to try it anyway, does anyone know how hot the VRM's get, there are only six of them that don't get contact, i'm thinking if i double up on thermal pads it might be ok. or grind away a bit of the block that's touching the tops of the coils.

The manufacturer will be able to tell for a start, so any issues with the block will be blamed on you. Warranty probably voided.

But mostly because if it doesn't work out, the block is now a paperweight, if won't cool the ref board efficiently in that area either.

edit: check the stability, it may well be the case that it doesn't get too hot and the pads will be sufficient. Hopefully so as that will save you some hassle.

Yeah, looking at the stock cooler there looks to be hardly any cooling there anyway tbh, so i might give it ago.

As to the grinding, the part i would be grinding won't be cooling anything anyway, the only reason you put a pad on the chokes is to stop shorting.
