"It's been a poor, poor five years for fiction in the video game industry"

WTF, games are nothing but fiction and why is the article saying sequels aren't fiction?

The Dark Knight Rises, thats a true story.

Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Borderlands, Fallout 3, Deus Ex HR... - I'd say we've done alight for game fiction recently.

Borderlands had a story?

I think he's right tbh, even the "epic" story line games feel a bit thin in terms of truly great, deep stories of late.

Deus Ex: HR was probably the best I've seen for a long time, Alan Wake also good, as were DA:O, Fallout 3. The MW story line was pretty good until it got a bit too silly in the third.

There's loads of gems you just need know where to look! Alan Wake, Deadly Premonition, Black Ops, Alpha Protocol, Heavy Rain etc.

What a complete pile of turd that story is....

I can name a dozen!

Step 1 he needs to replace his landmark from 2007 with some along the lines of the witcher(Also 2007) Love bioshock, But seriously there are better IPs to have as your goal post.

Part of what he said is true. A lot of unoriginal bland sequels have been ruling the market for a while now, however that's the same with all walks of life. For example The Sun and the Daily Mail are the best selling newspapers even though they're piles of garbage, just because something is a top seller doesn't represent the quality of the item. But there's been loads of great quality sequels as well (Mass Effect etc).

Also, Indie games alone in the last 5 years have shown how creative, brilliant original ideas can come to life.

Overall though it's not been a poor five years at all. A little stagnant? sure, but you just have to look a bit harder for those gems.

Eurogamer make me laugh. Pretty sure they're the same guys who criticised an MMO after barely making it out of character creation and playing for less than an hour (giving it something like 2 or 4 out of 10).

"all games are rubbish, but don't worry I have returned with a new game!....all bow down before me"

Some questionable statements in there. Narrative has greatly improved in games as a whole I have found. Deus Ex:HR, the Mass Effect games and Dragon Age Origins for a start.

Are these articles written by a German or something, where everything has to be incredibly high standard to even warrant a look in.

Right now, we have a lot of New Yorks, we have a lot of war games. Please everybody," he pleaded, "let's do more science-fiction and more crazy worlds out there.
He does raise a valid point. a lot of games these days are set in the same worlds or born from games that are 5-10yrs old. there are exceptions to that but by and large there is little variety out there. he's not complaining about the story's just the artistic direction.

Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, Skyrim, Borderlands, Fallout 3, Deus Ex HR... - I'd say we've done alight for game fiction recently.

Dragons age -
Mass Effect - 6years old
Skyrim - Elder Scrolls date back to the 90's
Borderlands -
Fallout 3 - Fallout is 15+ years old now
Deus Ex - Is now a teenager

All great games in there own right but you cant say they are new ideas :)

I think there is some truth to what he says in that article. Some genres are stagnant and could do with a bit of a shake up. He's right that there is an abundance of war games in the market, especially within the FPS genre with titles that take their story cues from the same limited pool of ideas as most of the other war based titles out there.

There have been new IP's in recent years but they're the minority, not the majority. Many of the big blockbusters that people have mentioned are pretty derivative of whats came before. As has been said, you have to keep an eye out for the gems as they often don't get the big marketing push that series like CoD and GoW have.

The games that have left the biggest impression on me this generation aren't the mega blockbusters but are often the smaller, niche titles that give something new to the table.

I'd like to see new titles that really push the bar in terms of storytelling and don't fall back on the safety net of what has worked before.
