GTX 480 SOC on the way out?!

Hey guys,

Well I'm at a loss right now but hopefully someone has either encountered this problem or has any idea what to do.

Recently I've noticed a lot of 'stuttering' while gaming which has worsened over the last few weeks. Whenever playing a game after a period of time the game will begin to 'stutter' constantly, it doesn't matter what game or how old. Every single one is doing this. Temps wise my GTX 480 is hitting between 80-85 load which is absolutely fine but also when benchmarking for example on Kombuster I am seeing the same situation.

Checking the monitor the GPU is dropping it's usage briefly and then back to 99% again.

System spec is as follows:

Intel Core i7 930 @ 4.0 Ghz
6GB DDR3 Tri Channel Corsair Ram
GTX 480 SOC
Asus P6X58D-E
Corsair TW650W
1x1TB Sata II Drive
1x64GB Crucial SSD

All latest drivers plus tried both the latest WHQL and Beta for the Nvidia Card.

I think I have a spare 4850 lying around which will be enough to test out the other components to rule out some sort of problem, however sadly I don't have a spare PSU incase that is the issue.

Just curious if anyone has experienced similar and in their experience what to do?

Cheers

is it the gigabyte 480 soc?

iirc they were a load of dodgy ones stuttering and artifacting being sold late 2010.

any chance it could be a refurbed one of those?

Mines was bought at the original offer and has been solid up until now...which is quite frustrating, actually experiencing some stuttering right now as I type this

I'm certainly going to have to hook up another GPU to rule it out, the problem obviously comes when sending it back to Gigabyte for them to then recreate the problem.

I have the same card, though all I've had is a little artifcating on the rare occasion, but no stuttering. Due to this apparent 'problem', I have now started dropping the memory clock down the smallest of amounts. So far, so good.

I'll maybe try possibly dropping the clocks and see how I get on with it mate.

So I may have solved it...surprisingly :p

I have now removed my Asus Wireless PCI-E card and low and behold the stuttering has ceased...

I'll of course need to try some further testing now however it seems rather odd since I've had the card in my PC I've only started seeing problems recently.

So I'll monitor things over the next few days and hopefully a simply Wireless Adapter has been the cause of this and the 480 SOC lives on

Very encouraging. :)

I've noticed that mine is artifacting quite a lot in the odd game now, especially in Hard Reset. The temps in that game go beyond 85C even with the fan on 100%. Lowering the memory clock achieved little, though the good news is that reducing the core clock down from 820 to around 800 seemed to stop the artifacting.

If it's still in warranty i'd send it back, i'd imagine they won't have any in stock any more and you might end up with a 580 or something back instead ;)

I was seriously considering that last night, but figured that if they can't replicate the fault I'll be a bit stumped. It doesn't do it on that many games, yet, but it's certainly increasing. I'm assuming that Gigabyte / OcUK use something like Heaven, so I suppose I could try a run with something like that and see how it fares.
