Avast updated on me earlier, and since that my Steam has broken due to Avast saying that steamservice.exe is Malware. Is this a false positive, if so, can I fix it?

Fix:

1. Uninstall Avast, awful anti-virus.
2. Install Microsoft Security Essentials - great anti virus, doesn't give as much protection as others when it comes to idiots using PC's, but so long as you don't go on obvious malware sites, you'll never get any attack or virus on your machine.
3. ???
4. Profit.

Seriously, I really think that a full anti-virus program is just a way of shouting out 'I HAVE WEIRD SEXUAL FETISHES, I NEED PROTECTION FROM NASTY SITES PLZ'.

;)

Got the same here. Ignored it a few times and restored the file from the vault and then ignored some more and the game I was going to play (Mafia 2) finally ran! =)

Force of habit using Avast...

Or just don't use anti-virus software. I haven't for 2 years and I'm still running fine on the same OS install.

That's odd. Usually popular software such as Steam are automatically added to the exceptions list, maybe add it manually. Not familiar with Avast myself but the option should be there.

That's poor advice to give. Sure if you're computer savvy, don't frequent dodgy sites or download dodgy files then you probably won't get infected. But how does that help with day 0 exploits or maybe exploits in popular software you use that you cannot use? It's good to have an extra layer of protection and the pros of an av far outweighs the cons.

Had this ping up last night. Let it do it's thing then restarted Stea, updated the affected file and no issues afterwards.

Why do I have a popup telling me to Install Steam Service

And why does it seem to have frozen. My crystal ball is foreseeing a removal of Avast very soon...

That'll be because the service executable was deleted by Avast (or rather put in to it's virus vault).

EDIT - I just downloaded the installer from Valve's website having the same thing and repaired the installation that way and everything seems to be ok now.

I just did the above and put an exclusion on the Steam folder. I was looking at the wrong exclusion section first which is why nothing changed.
