New car time.

I think people judging these cars on the diesel engine need to go out in one first and then come back with "why didn't you buy a petrol". I'm a huge fan of petrol over diesel in most cases, certainly in a car built for performance driving but in a car like this that is wafting up and down motorways and A roads most of its life there is zero advantage. In a cruise the engine is pretty much silent and when you need to get around stuff it has plenty of oomph if you use it appropriately. Add to that an 8 speed auto that changes gears so quickly and smoothly you lose little or no push when changing and with a nice set of ratios which means you can keep it on song nicely it's a perfect combination. I can guarantee that a petrol version would not go any quicker so you are paying for what, a different noise and worse fuel consumption. We can all be silly and joke about lard burners, I am one who does it often but in real life the flexibility of close to 600 miles on a tank has some really nice advantages. If you are buying second hand however and want to save some money sure buy the petrol, makes lots of sense if you can find one as why pay a premium, not least if you don't do large miles, but to me this engine is perfect for this car.

Very much agreed. I've been of this opinion for years.

The only downside I have found so far is that with stop start on. When you pull up at the lights theres a big shudder as the engine stops and once again as it starts. It kind of spoils that aspect and Id much rather leave the engine idling which gives minimal vibration.

I commented on this when i drove a new 320d. It shudders too much and takes a snippet too long to come back to life when you're ready to go. I wonder if the petrol AutoStopStart systems are any better?

BTW - fantastic car. The F10 is the first 5 series i've preferred the looks of over the accompanying 3 series.

Saw one in white the other day and it just looked absolutely stunning. Didn't even sound bad and i saw it was a 530d!

They sound good actually. My wife took mine today as I was at home working and she came back having left her laptop and hearing it come up the driveway at full chat it did sound quite good actually, amazingly.

Housey, have you had any problems with the bluetooth syncing contacts? Im using an HTC Sensation and its only syncing about 30% of my phone numbers. I cant work out why I have tried re-pairing, changing bluetooth permissions on both phone and car, changing the details of contacts in the phone, taking pictures and facebook links off contacts and still cant get to the bottom of it. Its syncs the contacts in Office and show their email addresses but because it doesn't seen the phone numbers they don't show in the phone book. I can also see my text messages fine so that side of blue tooth is fine.

Stop start is one of those things I think I may get used to. It actually worked today a couple of times and I didn't realise the engine had stopped until it fired back into life. It works from when the engine is still fairly cold and that's when its at its harshest stopping and starting.

SMS only works with a bizarrely obsecure selection of relatively ancient phones, most of which are Nokia, IIRC. Unless they've fixed that.

I don't have stop start on mine, can't say I want it either. I'm sure it's not, but I always view it as a waste of time.

I really like it in the 4 cylinder diesels as it cuts out the horrible din and vibration through the cabin at traffic lights. The 6 pots suffer far far less from this so I'm not sure stop-start on those holds the same appeal.

I have on several occasions tried to switch mine on when it's on, I think that tells you how loud it is at idle though to be fair I am getting deaf with age.

The seem to have fixed that now. The office function allows full calender sync, text message and email. Depending on what phone you have depends on the functions but near enough all phones do sms and email. Mine for some reason does those but not full phone book sync.

Have you got any contacts with strange characters in?

Maybe some eastern european brass with some umlauts or something?
