Three strikes rule halves internet piracy in New Zealand

Is this media propaganda to try to introduce the same thing to the UK? Only seems to reference the month AFTER the ruling which was ages ago!

I don't know anyone here who was previously downloading stuff that has stopped and I still haven't met anyone who has received a notice!

Here in NZ we normally get TV shows, films, etc after everyone else and if they do release them on DVD the prices are inflated. Same goes for games and music. We have no Netflix and are barred from viewing the US or UK versions. Spotify only recently arrived in the last couple of months which has helped, but that's about it.

I would rather the music/film industry looked at why people pirate in the first place - ie lack of options, high prices and long lead times.

Oatmeal comics got it spot on here - http://theoatmeal.com/pl/game_of_thrones/nz

A recent example for me personally was Diablo 3. The physical copy cost loads in NZ so I went the digital route. Price looked OK in USD and UK GBP but when I signed in it detected a NZ price and gave a price massively inflated over what I saw before signing in to my NZ account! I ended up calling my mate back home in the UK who bought it from Asda and emailed me the serial key!!

Most UK ISPs run a 3 strikes rule

I worked and later managed the abuse department of an ISP and daily there were lawyers representing movie/music/game companies faxing in evidence of IP addresses at certain date times. We'd disable their accounts and force the user to fax an apology to re-enable their account and if they got busted 3 times close their account down.

Well I operate a one strike and you're out policy against my ISPs. If they tried to send me some silly letter I'd just cancel my contract with them an go elsewhere (hence resetting any strikes against me).

Seems a bit unworkable to me.

So you get upset when your ISP catches you downloading illegally?

But an IP is not a person. If they tried that on me I wouldn't be writing an apology as it's an admission of guilt.

Prices is mainly an excuse people use to justify themselves, I mean recently an Android game went free due to piracy, it cost like 63p, yes people with £600 smart phones couldn't afford less than a quid for a game.

What a stupid thing to say

You wait for the second strike before cancelling ;):p

Are there any law students who know about piracy? Is it true that torrent userlists aren't enough to prosecute someone and you would need evidence from a hard drive?

Media companies need to give customers access to their content in a more convenient and timely fashion... that's true.

***** who use that as an excuse to copyright infringe and pirate, as they feel they're entitled to take without paying, are laughable.

The former doesn't in any way justify, or legitimise, the latter.

I buy all my stuff. I use Spotify premium for music, Steam for games and Amazon UK for DVDs! Works out cheaper buying them from the UK and getting them shipped over than buying locally...

For a year Amazon UK had free shipping to NZ and Oz if you spent more than 25GBP. I miss that offer. God knows how they were making money!

Moses, do you work for the music or film industry by any chance? Seem to remember you always backing them? Not being harsh, but just interested in why you seem to support the corporations whereas looking at these threads most people seem to side away from them.

IP + Date/time = account = account holder. It is the account holders responsibility what goes on with their internet account.
