I've just moved into a hard water area and had a leaflet posted through the door the other day, advertising a water softener system (don't recall the name), which got me thinking!

Is there a main "renowned" brand when it comes to water softeners or any that anyone can recommend?

Thanks!

Gay!

And it sounds a bit like a con to me... Is it for drinking water? If so, its just going to taste terrible (Britta water filters were supposed to do something like this but I found it tasted nasty).

Was going to say exactly the same thing. Just use a Brita type filter for drinking water and use descalers if you get a build up in your kettle and other such implements.

No no, I mean a water softener for the non-drinking water, with the aim of reducing the water marks left in the bathroom, softer washing (apparently!) etc!

Never had one before, but lots of people seem to be recommending them! (friends that is, not advertisers!)

We use a water softener for the whole house supply and you really can tell the difference, it is like night and day, it takes about 50kg of softener salt and you can feel when it runs out, i cant give you the brand name at the moment but ill check tonight and let you know

They are brilliant, you will notice when it is fully up and running how the lime scale you get on taps is reduced and just feels better to shower with imo. A bit weird though, when you wash your hands with softened water even after the soap has come off it feels like you still have soap on your hands! One of my relatives was like this soap is proper weird, even after rinsing my hands I just can't seem to get it off lol :D

Monarch Water is the one we have but I hear the Scalemaster ones are pretty good as well.

You are not suppose to drink softened water hence why they say the kitchen sink shouldn't have softened water or have a separate tap for drinking water.

Lived here for 11 years and always had one till a few weeks ago, it broke. Was without one for a week, noticed the difference for sure! Glad we have one again, though seem to be using more salt than usual.
The bags are like 20KG each, will try and find out the model later.

Might as well copy this in, we got the Hague 400 one.

I very much appreciated the opportunity of visiting your home on Tuesday afternoon. I am pleased to be able to make recommendations as to the softening products most suited to your needs. The choice is between the highly advanced Hague 400 water softener and the Kinetico 2020c non-electric water softener.

The Hague Maximizer 400 is a very exciting new product from one of the world’s leading water treatment companies. This remarkable machine brings together the efficiency and high flow rates of non-electric machines with the ability to fine tune efficiency through the digital controller. The running costs are half that of the Kinetico, and the flow rate is higher, making this ideal for direct fed hot water systems with the high demands of modern showers etc. The Hague is unique in that it has a built in, self cleaning filter to protect from sediment in the water, and its build quality is second to none. This machine can use convenient block salt or tablet salt.

KINETICO’s are renowned for their performance and reliability and they will do the job with the minimum of attention. They are non electric, have no controls to worry about or adjust, although this does make them less salt efficient, and use the convenience of block salt. KINETICO’s water treatment engineering is in a class of its own. Its position in the industry was recently reaffirmed by being the ‘preferred’ softener to provide pre treatment to both of the world’s leading manufacturers in renal dialysis equipment. This is due to the minimum sodium levels involved and also the guarantee that no salt residues will be left in the resin cylinders after regeneration.

The costs break down as follows:
The cost of installing the Hague is:
To supply and commission a Hague 400 water softener (10 % discount) £1064.25
To install, upgrading hoses and waste £80.00
To supply of 1 bag of tablet salt FOC
Sub total 1144.25
VAT 228.85
TOTAL £1373.10

There is a ten year warranty on cylinder and cabinet with this softener, and three years on mechanical and electrical parts, with 2 years on labour.

With the 2020c there is the following:

To supply and commission a KINETICO 2020c water softener(10% disc) £999.00
To install, upgrading hoses and waste £80.00
To supply of 1 pack of block salt FOC

Sub total 1079.00
VAT 215.80
TOTAL £1294.80

This includes a 10 year parts warranty and 2 year labour.

£1300 for a water softener - Wow. TBH I've always lived in a hard water area (judging by maps) and I can't really notice/taste any difference.

We don't drink from ours, don't think you're meant to.

Showers is where I notice the difference, like you can use less shampoo for example. My skin is also very sensitive so once our softener broke my skin messed up :p

£1300!

Disconnect pipe, salt box from Screwfix £500, reconnect pipe.
Get a 3-5 stage filter if you would also like to remove bogeys

Salt is salt, they all do the same thing, some are just more efficient.
