HI there

For those who are finding the Toxic 6GB card a bit unbearable on the wallet, Sapphire also have a Vapor-X edition with 3GB of RAM at a much more reasonable price point:-

Sapphire HD 7970 VAPOR-X GHZ 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - AMD 3 for FREE Promotion @ £399.95 inc VAT

GX-303-SP_400.jpg

The SAPPHIRE HD 7970 3GB Vapor-X Edition delivers a similar high performance as the HD 7970 6GB Vapor-X model but at a more aggressive price point. It has 3GB of the latest GDDR5 memory clocked at 6000MHz effective, and runs with a core clock speed of 1000 MHz which with PowerTune Dynamic Boost rises to 1050 MHz on the engine. It has a slightly less sophisticated 8-phase power design and the versatile output configuration of Dual-link DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort.

Vapor-X Cooling Design: The brand new Vapor-X cooling design is based on a new vapor-chamber designed especially for the HD 7970 Vapor-X. With two 90 mm HJB bearing fan and 2 x 8mm plus 2 x 6 mm highly efficient heatpipes, the cooler easily handles the heat generated from the HD 7970 Vapor-X even when it is running over 1000 MHz.

TriXX Utility: TriXX allows tuning of GPU voltage as well as core and memory clocks, whilst continuously displaying the temperature. Manual control of fan speed is supported, as well as user created fan profiles and the ability to save up to four different performance settings.

Features:-
- Fastest single GPU graphics card on the planet

I am actually pleasantly surprised by the price of the 3GB Ghz edition cards. I'm not surprised that they're able to sell them fairly cheap as they are essentially the same card as the 'vanilla' 7970. I'm surprised that AMD haven't slapped a huge price premium on them for having the arguably the "fastest card out the box" tag on it.

Edit: Gibbo you've put 6GB of DDR5 in the specs in your post and on the site.

What do you mean? It's £50-£70 more expensive than the good brands 7970 with custom cooler... Is the factory overclock worth that much?

Its only £10 more than their similar model though:

Hopefully the other vendors will release cheaper models, really dont know why AMD persist with sapphire as their preferred vendor

Don't get me wrong - I still think it's a pointless card. It's just not got as much a price premium on as I thought. £10 is next to nothing.

Hold on boys, we don't know if this chip is a newer stepping yet.

Gibbo, don't suppose you fancy picking 5 out of this shipment and seeing what they do at 1.38v ? :)

Failing that, a GPU-Z shot?

Actually I do like Sapphire as a brand, but the biggest problem is they have no UK nor Europe RMA base, and have to send the card to Hong Kong or something.

I wouldn't pay £40-£60 more for a Sapphire card when MSI or Asus got the 7970 with custom coolers for that much lesser.

Yeah thats what I mean, RMA is a PITA with sapphire, no UK base and they are very strict with returns, unlike MSI :D

Asus also htave a bad RMA reputation. Lets just hope AMD havent given sapphire a month headstart with the GHZ edition chips or we will be waiting till september to see GHz edition cards from the other brands (and hopefully cheaper cards too)

What I found ironic is that Hong Kong was British colony (well, untill 1997), yet Sapphire don't have UK rma base :( (Then again, Sapphire wasn't found until 2002...)

I know the two things are not related, but still...lol

Do the GHz Ed cards actually overclock further than standard versions? If so, what extra bang do you get for £50-£80 premium?

Isn't it a hungary RMA base?

I hate Hungary, it always reminds me of how famished I am. For that reason, and that reason alone, I will never by Sapphire

Reviews so far suggest you don't get a different chip you get same old 7970s with default clocks a little higher and a bios which works on standard cards to allow a boost.
