Hi guys,

Just a quick question, does anybody have any idea of what the rough sort of trade in/auction price a W reg manual 230K would be? Unknown miles, been laid up since at least November last year so I'm assuming no MOT, bonnet, front wings and boot are rotten and will need replacing, but the rear arches aren't too horrible and underneath seems solid and the paint work is surprisingly good when it comes to scratching and dents.

A quick look at auto trader shows decent examples being worth as much as £3,500. I could not really justify spending half that on this particular example so I'm not going to even bother asking unless there is a realastic chance I could pick it up for mega cheap (It is a trade in at work waiting to be served up at auction so it is literally going to be book price).

As ever, any input is much appreciated :)

This need so much work that trade book price is not a price which has any bearing.

I'd offer a grand for it, at most.

Depends on the condition. I have had a couple of dealers tell me not to bother with them and to just sell it private. As pointed out, there are few of these around now and people seem to travel very far (and pay a decent sum) for one in mint condition. In your case, I wouldn't pay more than a grand.

Unless you are prepared to do it yourself (or know someone who can), body work repairs can be expensive. There are quite a few little parts that are very difficult to acquire now.

Cant imagine the panels are cheap for these, need to allow 1k minimum for themincase you need to get some new imo - plus potential mechanical work at a punt of 500 quid. Mot test itself costs 50 quid and potential new rubber costs of what, 400 quid? Wouldn't even pay 1k for it in all honesty

Agreed. Scrap value + goodwill at best.

Dont see the point, its not as if a minter is expensive.

You didn't think it was for me did you!?

My only interest is to sort the bodywork a bit and try to make a bit of a margin on it before the summer ends.

I can remember a performance car article from what might have been 1996 when it was unveiled at a show. They were moaning that it was apparently only the 200 that had a manual. The ones with the milled steel dash finish is nice though

They probably didn't offer the manual with the 230k at first, but I do know a person that has a 230k manual (albeit it's LHD and not in the UK)

CAP suggests a W-reg with 60k miles in 'below average' condition is around £2,275. Given your description, the car is quite a bit worse than 'below' average, so my guess would be around £1,000-£1,500 max. CAP Clean is £3k.

Careful - you can't use CAP to compare a damaged car to one that's working but in "poor" condition.

Well you can, hence him valuing it at half cap below.

You can, but it will bear no relation to the actual value of the car. Until you see the thing you've got absolutely no idea how much it'll cost to repair - making that assumed half value less than useless.

It simply won't be worth it unless you can pick it up for a few hundred quid. Even nice ones don't sell for much money.
