GTX 680 prices

They just look more expensive now as the ati 7xxx prices have settled to fairly decent levels. Even the 7870 looks a decent price in its bracket now. The 670 is still quite well positioned but the premium for the 680 is too much.

Looks to me like amd's price gouging period is over, hopefully nvidias will be over soon (690 not withstanding).

Not exactly...imo the only reason why there are two cards between the 7850 and 7970 IS for price gouging. There is no need for both 7870 and 7950 (which both performance is very close to one another), as it should have really just 7950 at around £230 and with no need for the 7870 even to exist.

Yes I agree, I meant over for this generation. You can get their current top card (reference 7970) for £300 now which is in line with previous generations. The 680 still has a premium on top for one reason or another. Let's hope they drop the 680 prices but as Gregster says, perhaps they can't produce enough 680's to fulfil the demand if they dropped the price.

True, but they were quite a card for the money, the 670 is shockingly expensive for what you get card wise, there's hardly anything on the PCB, it's why I am holding onto my 480, I refuse to pay these ridiculous prices for such a small card that is obviously over priced by an even bigger margin than previous generations.

Precisely. The GTX 580 was superior to the 6970 on all levels except the 500mb of RAM which was not an issue for most people. Fermi was also a leap ahead of Tesla. I don't deny that it was pricey but it was on the upper end of the price range at £3xx. But the 680 is just being ridiculous. £4xx for THAT card? Really? And in what universe is pricing a £900-£1000 graphics card (GTX 690) even remotely sane? Even GTX 590 which was considered expensive for its time was something like £600 iirc.

The GTX 680 is not a premium card. The 580, yes, it was. The 680 is on par wit ha 7970 with all things considered. If it's better it's only negligibly better. IT shouldn't command premium pricing

when i got my GTX 680 on release day it was cheaper and better than the vast majority of 7970's. While the 7970's and 7950's have now had a official price drop the 680's have not. The 680's have still come down a little overall from day one prices as surpply is now a lot better.

Imo a gtx 680 has a good Price to performance ratio when compared to the 7970, even more so when you look at the 670 and the 7950

If you consider the 670 also trades blows with the 79XX series and they are with in about 50 quid of each other. The 680 is over priced but it is aalso supposed to be nvidias flagship card.

You can get a reference GTX 680 for £369 at a competitor, even less if you use a much publish voucher codes and a 7970's start around £340

680 prices have dropped slightly but don't expect a significant fall until we get a new high-end card.

yeh i get that. im not questioning the 670. its great value comparatively. i was questioning how the 680 can be called good for price/performance.

theres a 7970 selling here for £300 not on a deal. if you want to take into account vouchers and deals, an overclocked custom cooler 7970 was selling for 320 last week but i think if we look at base prices its a better comparison, preferably from the same retailer.

so from here we have a branded 7970 selling for £300 whereas the own brand 680 is £380.
if we were to disregard that one off, own brand card, the price rises to £400.

for performance that trades blows and not taking into account overclocking thats £100 difference. let us not also forget the 7970 is amd's flagship so using that as a explanation for the 680's price doesnt really cut it. even if you want to take the cheaper 680 from the other retailer thats still £80 more for a very similar performance card, nevermind the deal that is the 670. the 680 simply isnt good value for money, compared to amd or compared to one of nvidias own cards.

The 7970 cards are better value at the moment after their price cut, if the 680 is too expensive for you don't buy it, get a 670 or a 7970. If people stop buying them they will lower prices.

Agreed. The 680 is poor price/performance ratio. But that is only in the context of AMD's devaluing and how close the 670 is.

If nVidia are still shifting enough units at the current price, why cut it? It will depreciate over time naturally but why the need for across the board price cuts if they're still turning over a decent amount on it?

The 680 is a premium card along with the 690. Anything above £300 I would class as a premium GPU.

Anything above £300 I would class as a premium GPU.

In no way is a stock 670 for example a premium card in the flesh compared to it's competitors offering.

£40'ish cheaper(there are cheaper versions of both) with 50% more vram chips, longer PCB, 3 games thrown in.

Who's ripping their customers off the most regarding manufacturing costs?

I'm also of the opinion that Nvidia designed the stock cooler to make it look longer in order for it to look more like a £300 card, they could have put a much shorter cooler on it if they wanted too.

The 6 series is an outstanding gpu, but as the Nvidia tech guys having introduced the fantastic 'boost' clock feature, it enabled Nvidia to charge beyond what the cards worth, imo.

I'm with exsistor, the 680 holds nowhere near the level of advantage over a 7970 when both are flat out in comparison to the 580/6970 overclocked to the max, there was a big enough difference to justify the premium.

The 580 was worthy of it's price premium as the fastest single gpu crown holder, this time there's nothing in it despite the considerable premium involved.

Loffles, did you really just compare physical make-up in an effort to highlight 'Premiumness'?

Who cares what it is made of, it is how it performs that counts. The 670 (or 680 for that matter) could be bright pink, with fluff and shiny glitter for all I care if it performed as it should.

All it goes to show is the 670 does what AMD's offering can with a half size PCB. If size of PCB and how much you can throw on it dictates Premium then excuse me while I go list some old ISA slotted GPUs on eBay for a few grand!

Does not matter the cost to AMD or Nvidia, the price are set by the performance and the demand. These are businesses, not charities. AMD set the price high, nVidia followed. AMD have slashed prices because they need to, nVidia can leave them as is and still shift stock.

There is about -1% in high end performance on this latest gen, only fanboys will argue otherwise, the most sensible thing to do is grab whatever is cheapest.

I got my 7970's for £250 each, if I had found a GTX 680 for £250 I would have got that aswell. Price is the important factor this gen because performance wise there is barely any difference ( Except in the deranged fanboy mind ).
