Blizzard agrees with Valve: Windows 8 is bad for video game makers

I think "Blizzard" and "Valve" are full of it to be honest.

The belief in the development community is that Microsoft will make Windows 8 a closed system, an operating system that seeks to more stringently control, much in the way that Apple does with Mac OS X and the iOS platform.

When do Microsoft plan to implement this? In the days between now and RTM? Or do they plan to break all of our games and applications with Service Pack 1?

This would allow Microsoft to better monitor the quality of applications running on its platform, but it will also wall off the most widely used operating system in the world from myriad developers. PC game makers use Windows because of the openness of the platform and its ubiquity. If Microsoft takes that openness away, what will developers do?

Yeah, that sounds rational. Last time I checked Microsoft were in the business of making money and this doesn't sound like a great way to go about it.

It's nonsense.

^^ I think your taking it too literal - MS have undoubtedly moved towards tighter control of the OS and companies like Blizzard and Valve are pre-emptively making noise to make sure that it doesn't subtley become locked down in MS's favor over time.

I agree there is some posturing going on, but why not level it at Windows RT and the Windows Store?

Windows 8 is the least of their worries.

The EU Commission on Competition would never let it go that far. Microsoft have to be very careful on what they do with 90% market share.

Actually MS just got done by the EU the other week for removing the browser choice from windows updates. Trying to bully people into paying them for the privilege of coding on windows can only backfire horribly in so many ways. Windows ME?

They realised it was a dumb idea and thankfully came to their senses about a week later and reversed the decision. The article is outdated now.
