I,ve just sold a 9 year old Transit Connect with 109,000 miles on the clock. It was previously owned by the company I worked for and I know its history from new.
I told the buyer that it needs a service, I even went as far to say that the starter motor might need changing soon as it has recently started sticking.
He knocked my price down and purchased the vehicle.
Anyhow, 20 minutes later I got a call from him saying that he can hear a scraping noise when he goes over 50mph, the van has only had very light use recently, mainly 2-3 miles at 30mph in traffic.
He brought the vehicle back and took me for a drive, he drove briskly and the van performed well, I didnt hear any noises so I suspect that it may just be rust on the brake discs.
Question is what do I do if it comes back tomorrow?

I wrote him a receipt with 'sold as seen' on it.
I don't think he's going to go away if there is a problem though

he can't do anything about it.. it was up to him to find the faults with the car before paying he paid he owns it and he will pay for repairs w/e is up with it.

It's a 9 year old van, that has driven the circumference of the world over 4 times.

I was never going to be 'as new'

Tell the buyer that old vans are often rattly, and it's no longer your rattly old van but his, and to have a wonderful day.

Private sales seem to be going this way in general;

You are as honest as you can be and price the vehicle accordingly.
The buyer beats the price down further on these issues and you begrudgingly accept.
Buyer then returns with phantom issues or discovers something and wants even more money back.
You then either cave in or have a thorn in your side until they give up.

I'm sure this is why the private used market is shrinking and certainly why I was happy to lose a few hundred quid to just throw my one in the auctions.

^^ Exactly how I am feeling, I never intended to rip the guy off.
The fact is Transit Connects fetch silly (high) money for what they are.

a 5 year old transit connect for £1500 ? really?

Yep,

Literally straight from the fleet just company branding removed.

Broken bumpers and scrapes etc will not be fixed. Company finds it cheaper just to buy 20 vans at once to get best deal then just wants the old ones gone.

Well mine was over 9 years old and it sold for more than £1500!

I would say that a 5 year old Connect for £1500 is a bargain, if you have the ability to put any faults right.
