Starting my new job tomorrow (Sales exec with Trinity Mirror), and my only niggle is what to wear. Agency who got me the interview said "business dress, don't worry about a tie though". So I've got a dark blue pinstriped shirt and black trousers/shoes set out for tomorrow. My only fear, irrational and inconsequential as it may be, is that I should be wearing a white shirt. High class problems or what, eh?

So: white shirt, or coloured is fine? Just worried I'll look like I'm going out clubbing or something :p

"business dress" means suit and tie... They said no ties, so drop the tie. Definitely wear a jacket though, especially on your first day...

just any shirt trousers and decent shoes, surprised in sales you dont have to make more of an effort though.

It's all inbound phone sales I'm lead to believe, so I think it's pretty informal, but still an office requiring business-y clothes.

Thanks for the feedback then, put my mind at ease. I think I'll have to buy a bunch of shirts with my first paycheque then. Ugh, hate having to worry about being properly dressed. Style/fashion are not my forté

She did say don't bother with a suit or I would've worn that. My only jacket is my suit jacket (which doesn't match anything else) so it's either suit, or no suit. I'm putting my hopes on no suit.

I would always aim to overdress on the first day, you can always take a jacket or a tie off if you feel like it.

From Day 2 onwards, go with whatever everyone else was wearing.

OP, you can't go wrong with the below. Just say you know you're in the right as you seeked help on an internet forum.

Your shirt should compliment your suit, not dominate it. You will wear a chalk or heavy pin-stripe suit, blue of course, and you will wear a cut-away collar shirt from Thomas Pink and a pure silk tie (I'm thinking red, a bold red) with a half-Windsor knot. Your shirt will be either Flamenco Pink or Bright White.

Your shoes will have leather soles and will make a pleasant clack-clack noise as you walk. They're black, perhaps chestnut if you've gone for a royal blue suit.

You can choose your own scent but I would recommend Anteus by Chanel.

Your socks are black. This isn't open to discussion. All formal socks are black. Blue at a push.

For your hair, I recommend American Crew. If you have short hair then I'd go yellow lid. If you have slightly longer hair then I'd go blue lid. Both will give you a firm, matte finish, allowing you to later resculpt if necessary.

You will have clay-masked, toned, washed and moisturised before any of the above happens.

Good luck.

Like the "Hombré" dude from Friends. I could pull it off.

I think, given the variety of opinion, I'll wear the shirt and trousers, but with a tie. It's formal enough to show respect, and it's still warm enough to pretend I was too hot for a jacket. If too formal, off comes the tie and bingo. Christ, I'm overthinking this. It's a sodding training week! :p

Well, my shoes have leather soles. I'll sing you a JT song if you buy me the rest.
