Zod is the villain, It's influenced by Superman: Birthright by the sound of things in origin.
Stop talking absolute rubbish when it comes to reboots. iconic superheroes/characters will always be rebooted across every generation. the same way in which comics are constantly evolving and changing and different stories are told through that medium using the same characters. These are comic book characters, who get their origin stories re-imagined every 5-10 years in comics.
These aren't stand alone tales that shouldn't be touched.
The best thing about Comics, every new writer gets a chance to put their spin, their unique creativity into the character, the same should apply to these characters on the screen. For better or even for worse.
Finally, someone who gets it like I do. This is why I am slightly upset about people complaining about the need for another origin story. I think many people are forgetting that WE'VE ONLY HAD ONE ORIGIN MOVIE FOR SUPERMAN. And that was back in 1978.
Yes, you can pick up a comic book and read his origin story from there. But guess what? As shipinabottle just said, every writer that comes on board for Superman likes to give us their take on it. Even Henry Cavill said that as far as he is concerned, the TRUE origin of Superman is from the comics and not the TV shows or the movies.
I have read countless Superman origin stories and each one has a unique take on the character. Who is he? Why is he here? What is his purpose? All these questions are answered differently in each interpretation of the character.
Superman Red Son, Superman: Secret Origin, Superman Birthright. These are just some of the origin stories that I have read and each one is just as good as the other.
So when Zack Snyder was brought in as the director of Man Of Steel, the first thing the team decided on was "let's ignore what's been done before in terms of movies" They respect the previous movies, but they know also that we have never had an action packed Superman movie since whenever. You get them in comics and sometimes on TV, but never on the big screen. The closest we have come to Superman pulling punches on someone was with Zod in Superman II. But even then, it still wasn't "action" enough.
So yeah, I am hoping Man Of Steel will kick epic butt. It's the movie I have been waiting for, for a long time. Get used to the idea that superhero characters will be rebooted for a long time to come. Whether we like it or not.
I wasn't alive in 1978 when Superman The Movie was released, but I love the movie so much and feel that Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman. But even I know that as time goes on, newer generations want to see these comic book characters portrayed differently than they were before. And for someone as old skool as myself, I welcome the changes they are making. Why should we live in the past? Timeless classics like Superman The Movie will always be around, never doubt that for a second. But there comes a time when we need things updating for newer audiences.
And breathe.
