Jury Summons

Exactly, the majority of the session can last 1-2 weeks, others can drag on for a month +, its a lottery. Being away from work released on jury service for a month + can have a dramatic effect.

Once at the court, you should be asked if being placed on a long trial is going to cause any major problems for you.

When I did my service, we were told by the judge that the case is expected to last two weeks and if that caused any problems to let him know when (if) your name was called. Some people selected for the "pool" had already done a weeks service and at least one person raised this issue and was excused from the case.

What about those people who dont want a hot metal rod stuck up their backside from criminal's wanting revenge. :p

If i was forced to do it, i would probably sit there day dreaming to be honest, can you take your PS Vita in?

You are there to decide whether someone potentially has their liberty removed. Have some respect, this is not a decision to be taken lightly.

im all for it, and I understand why we have to do it. but, and I will be honest, I would hate to be called. I get really panicky if im forced to stay in a room for an unknown amount of time and get ill. im fine if I know how long it will take, or if I can leave at any point I like, but having this taken away I wouldn't be able to concentrate at all :(

So if you ever get wrongly arrested due to mistaken identity or something, would you like it if all of the jurors had that attitude rather than to properly do their job?

Plus when we cant forceably remove someone from the country due to human rights, what right do they have to force me to do this.

Devoting a few hours of your time to helping the justice system is a little different than being forcibly kicked out of a country, permanently.

I was excused twice. First time the date was around the due date of my wife and I cant remember why the second time.

The problem with Jury service is that if the case drags on it can have a massive financial impact. Even with the statutory pay it wouldn't cover my mortgage and other bills.

I wouldn't mind doing it if they gave me enough to cover my bills and mortgage. Can you state for financial reasons to opt out?

can you be called up for literally anything? or do you only get smaller cases like theft or something and the bigger stuff is done but pro's?

I would LOVE to do jury service!!

I genuinely don't understand the comment 'obviously he doesn't want to do it'??
Why is that 'obvious'? Surely it's a privilege to be given the opportunity to contribute to society and lock up a baddie.

In this case it's very simple, he's over the age range and has good grounds to contact the court and state that he is unable due to being too ill or infirm.

However, if he is perfectly capable of attending and is just using his age as an excuse then I would suggest that there is a moral obligation to attend and contribute to society.

Exactly why I think it should be voluntary. I'd rather have a Jury made up of people who are enthusiastic and want to be there than people like me or robj20 who would hate the entire thing.

It would still be a cross section of the public, but it would be people who want to do it.

Untill they have proper punishment for crimes i want nothing to do with putting a murderer in prison for a couple of years, when he should be getting the gas chamber. Just my views and its not going to change. I would be just sat there not concentrating so whats the point in me being there.

It would be a disaster!! Jury's would be made up of lefty idiots who don't like authority and would take great pleasure in finding everyone not guilty!
