Has anyone flown long haul with a baby? I am flying from London to Sydney with a 6 month old baby in a months time and could use some reassurance/wise words/general anaesthetic.

get the box set of air crash investigator,

watch all the episodes,

this will give you a good idea of what to look out for or do if the plane gets into trouble, probably best to learn to fly as well incease both pilots get incapicated...

I say "what to do if the plane gets into trouble" but95% of the time its decided for you usually involving a lot of terror and an sudden end to everyones life...

Sit as far away as possible from it. Babies and small children should be banned from all flights, absolutely nothing worse than being stuck on a flight with some squawking kid.

Airlines should either ban them or provide a completely soundproof room for them.

Oh man, I know someone who recently did a 3 hour flight with a 12 month old, and both mum and dad said it was one of the toughest periods of time they've ever experienced!

In summary there was a lot of crying and vomitting.

Don't do it.

A friend of ours took a 1 year old on a 9 hour flight to Antigua for our wedding, by the end of the flight even I wanted to break its neck.

Everyone will hate you for taking the baby, but saying that... you normally get the best (i.e. the ones with most leg room) seats at the front of the seating section. :p

We took Pup from the UK to Australia when she was about 7 months old. Two long flights, with a stopover in Honkers during which we never left the airport.

She was very good until the last hour, when she had a crying fit. Aside from that, it was OK. Babies can surprise you.

Take as much formula food on board as the airline will allow, and be prepared to breastfeed. Request bulkhead seats and a bassinet. Swaddle your child for the entire journey.

:)

A 6 month old will be fine. They only cry when theyre hungry or need a nappy changed! You need to worry when they start getting fed up being sat down for too long.

No one wants a baby on a flight, even if it didn't cry it would make the flight worse for everyone. Leave it at the cattery.
