Long Haul flights with babies.......

the first time i flew to the US i looked over to my right in shock as i noticed the couple had a baby. but tbf the little mite was good as gold, forgot it was there after a while.

i wouldn't want to take a 6 month old on such a long flight though and i wouldn't want to be another passenger on the flight either, i think it's just too long.

I hate long haul flights with babies on board. It's absolutely the worst thing a human being can inflict on another.

They dont let babies and children into Business and first class on most airlines so theres a solution for people complaining..... :p

Don't do it. Wait a few years. Hate flights when there are noisy children or babies disturbing the peace. "seen and not heard" is the ideal.

I know something worse than babies on a flight:

Toddlers that think it's ok to pass toys/try and engage with the person sitting behind them.
Oh dear god I hate that. It's like "sorry dude but no, I do not want to touch anything which has been near your hands"

I don't know what it is, but toddlers have constantly sticky hands. Jam hands if you will, even though there isn't any jam in the immediate vicinity.

Such a caring, tolerant, bunch on here aren't we?! :p
It's nothing personal, lets start with saying, you take a baby, possibly a toddler on a plane and people will be passive aggressively ****ed off.

But lets says for example, you took your drunk cousin on the plane, he spends half the flight crying/ being loud, *****/ ****es his pants, peers round to the people behind and trys to engange in slurred conversation when they just want to be left alone before the dude vomits on them.

It's about the same, but with the latter, you're damn right people would complain.

Do they not have to be quarantined for 6 months on the way back into the UK if they have not had their rabies vaccine and a microchip implanted?

Best get it done.

Airlines should introduce "quiet sections" of a plane where no babies are allowed. If babies bother people that much they can pay more to sit there.

It's a bit unrealistic to expect parents to leave their kids at home / not take them on holidays because it may disturb others.

They do. It's called "First Class".

I do laugh at the suggestions that babies should be banned from flights. Yes, they are annoying but if it annoys you so much, buy a ticket in First Class. Most airlines don't allow babies in the F cabin.

If you can't afford a ticket in F, then shut up and put up with it. Families with children need to travel too.

We took our 7 month old on a 4 hour flight, she was very good, she was entertained by toys etc, the usual.

We're off to NYC in December and she'll be a year old.

Deal with it :p

Prop babies eyes open for the preceding 48 hours to prevent sleep. Then for the flight he or she will hopefully sleep through :p

But seriously.. for the airport I would recommend a baby wrap or sling for the time spent standing around without a pushchair (probably depends significantly on the airport though.. e.g Pisa is very small so not very far to the baggage pickup and they put baby stuff out first*, in gatwick you have to walk about a mile just to get to the screen and then wait to find out where they are).
And of course milk on take off and landing to help with the ears.
Source: flew Gatwick to Pisa & back with 9 month old, much shorter flight of course

*good thing about Italy... we also got to the car rental desk with a queue of about 20 people in front of us. As soon as they saw us the guy behind the desk gestured for us saying "bambino, bambino" and we got our car first... :D so ner baby haters

I'm glad you laugh about it. I wonder if you would still be laughing if I sat next to you for the entirety of a long haul flight and screamed at the top of my voice. Just because the kid doesn't know better doesnt make it any less annoying.

That would be ok Osprey, as at your age, you can be punched lol

I feel guilty at being annoyed by crying children/babies during short train and bus rides. I'd certainly be frustrated if I was in the air with one for a long period of time but mainly because I find the crying distressing.

Ignore people telling you not to do it. Only had 1 flight where either of my children were a problem (1 was sick the other was crying). Most kids are fine if you have enough entertainment for them or are able to tire them enough to make them sleep for a good wedge of the flight.

When we did this my wife made sure that the baby was due a feed when the plane was taking off and landing. The baby will only cry as a result of the ears popping and by feeding it when that is happening it will reduce the pain and crying.

Good luck, it will be easy after take off :)

Has anyone flown long haul with a baby? I am flying from London to Sydney with a 6 month old baby in a months time and could use some reassurance/wise words/general anaesthetic.

Honestly?

I flew to New Zealand 3 rows down from a couple with a baby, and whilst they seemed to be able to sleep through its constant screaming and crying I couldn't.

I spent hours of that flight contemplating what life would be like as an axe murderer.

No pressure.

As i found out last month in Kazakhstan, babies aren't just confined to cattle class, which made the 3 hour internal flight a total drag, stupid screaming kids, they should be placed at the back of the plane as far away from me as possible.

We are moving to Sydney - so its not a trip I am doing for the lulz. Would (and have) holiday more locally until hes a bit older.

Thanks for the advice from some of you though. Will definitely make sure we take enough milk and already have a carrier which ill use to stroll around the plane at any opportunity.

Unfortunately hes quite a well developed 6 month old and is already crawling and requiring constant entertainment. So he wont just sit there and relax for 23 hours. :(
